Higher tuition for international students

MARQUETTE -- International students at Northern Michigan University may have to pay more for tuition in the future.
The Board of Trustees is considering a three-tier tuition system, something that would be a first in Michigan.
It would raise tuition for out of country students who currently pay out of state rates.
"The out of country individual has paid,or family has paid, traditionally neither in-state, or should I say, state taxes or federal taxes, and so a rationale in my opinion could be made that they should have a higher tuition level," said Vice Chair, Douglas Roberts.
The board is gathering more information before they make any decisions, including whether Canadian students would be exempt from paying the higher rates and whether raising out of country tuition would have a negative impact on enrollment.
They'll discuss the proposal again at their December meeting.
