Workers say the jobs should be local.

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP -- Union bricklayers in Marquette are picketing the site of the future Lowes home improvement store.

Bricklayers and Allied Craft Workers Local 9 are upset because the contract for concrete work went to Routsala Construction of Ironwood instead of a Marquette County company.

"We want local workers here, we want local contractors here," said union picketer John Kleiber.  "Right now we have a concrete contractor from three hours away.  We have contractors in this community that have been performing this work for years, keeping the local dollar local."

Picketers say they'll be outside Lowes through Friday.  They acknowledge that Lowes is using Marquette County workers for other jobs on the site.

Routsala told TV6 that, in fact, they do employ some Marquette County workers.

TV6 has been unable to contact Lowes for a response.
