HOUGHTON -- A Michigan Tech alumnus and Vice President for IBM says the need for college graduates in science, technology, engineering, and mathematical fields is greater now than ever.
John Soyring, Vice President of Solutions of Software, visited Tech's campus. He says people with computer science skills are in demand, as more industry rely on the rapidly changing technology.
Soyring estimates nearly a quarter of a million computer scientists will be needed to replace retiring baby boomers in the next decade.
"It's not so much the universities aren't ready. We've got some very talented people in the universities. We just don't have enough students in elementary schools and in high school who are retaining an interest in math and science and want to retain that, said Soyring.
Soyring, who grew up in Marquette, has worked for IBM since he graduated from Tech in the seventies.
