Not an easy business

MARQUETTE -- In today's world of computers and digital images, it may be a surprise to still see free hand cartoons in publications.

With just a few adjustments, it's an art and a career that's proved its place and purpose.

Brad Veley of Marquette has been a cartoonist for 22 years.  It hasn't been easy.  At times Veley has had to take a second, even a third job.  But he says it's been worth it.

To date, thousands of his cartoons have seen publication.  His focus is business.  He says his style isn't to be sarcastic or negative, simply to poke fun at the human race.

"I actually think of myself as a writer who doodles rather than an artist that writes cartoon captions and draws cartoons, because most of my ideas come from banging words together," said Veley.

He has a regular monthly mailing of cartoons, and he also does custom work and says that most of his ideas come to him when he's reading.
