ESCANABA & MARQUETTE -- Rockford native, Emily Hurd, is captivating on stage. Her wide vocal range, light fingers and clever lyrics aren't the only reasons why she's become a regular on the Chicago music scene. The way she wails through songs of love and loneliness with such emotion has gotten the Windy City buzzing.
And this weekend, Hurd's unique mix of folk, blues and jazz will be heard here in the U.P. She will be performing at the William Bonifas Fine Arts Center in Escanaba this Saturday, July 26, at 7 p.m. as a part of their Summer Concert Series.
But the cultural events don't end there. Actor Jeff Daniels brings back the wacky Soady family in his new play “Escanaba in Love”.
The comedy is a prequel to his hit “Escanaba in da Moonlight”. It travels back to opening day at the Soady Deer Camp in 1944 before then 18-year-old Albert Soady, Jr. leaves for the war.
"It's a little over the top. It might seem a little cartoony, but these characters are real. I've known people like this in this area,” said cast member playing the grandfather, Rusty Bowers.
And that's what the cast hopes will attract residents to the play.
"There are a lot of plays done about very specific regional areas, so in that way it's like a lot of other plays; but specifically, there's just not that much written about the U.P,” said actor B.G. Bradley, who plays the father.
“Escanaba in Love” opens Wednesday night at the Lake Superior Theatre Yacht Club in Marquette at 7:30 p.m. and will run until Sunday, August 3.
