WLUC Transmitter Upgrade

Posted by WLUC-TV6 Andrew Blandford, Negaunee, MI - Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 11:55 p.m.

We are still in the installation phase which has included room expansion at our transmitter site and HVAC upgrades. Once these requirements are complete we will start testing our new transmitter. When we are finished testing I will update our status with an approximate date of going on air.

WHAT IS GOING ON???

Posted by David R. LaCarte, Cornell, - Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 10:17 p.m.

For the longest time I can,was watching tv 6 very clear. All of a sudden, its gone. It is very discusting. Alot of people went out and bought all the stuff for this change, spent money and we get this.maybe tv 6 should start re-embursing people for what the people spent to watch them. I bet it would be alot more expensive than it would be to fix their oun tower. very discusting, tv 6 was not ready.
WILL YOU EVER BE???? cannot give a date, really?

Republic Tower

Posted by yoopr 1, Da U.P - Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at 6:30 p.m.

Tower is a whooping big 27 miles from me yet we, everybody in the area, can't pull in the Signal even though we were "Prepared" like 6 asked of us.
WLUC WASN'T prepared yet they like to push the blame onto us.
I can pull in channels from Rhinelander-Wausau which is ALOT further away than 6 with basically same terrain.
Only way that a person can get WLUC is to have a Dish because the majority of Yoopers don't live in the City.
Big Scam

WLUC Signal Upgrade

Posted by WLUC-TV6 Andrew Blandford, Negaunee, MI - Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at 5:13 p.m.

We are currently in the installation phase of a higher powered transmitter. This will increase our power from 63 kW to 83 kW. We still need to test this transmitter after it is installed and adjust it as required. We don't have a definite on air date with this new transmitter, but I will pass on our progress to keep the public informed.

To Paula in Felch-I get Rhinelander all day long and I live about 15 miles west of you. Aim your Antenna Southwest and late at night you'll get quite a few stations with that direction-also WAOW Wausau, and a CW Station and a couple of others that show really old movies.
Obviously you can get WNMU perfectly clear. Just aim your antenna where WLUC's tower is and you'll get all 3 stations

NO SIGNAL!

Posted by Tracey Wilinski, Niagara - Monday, September 14, 2009 at 12:42 p.m.

I live in Niagara, WI. (next door to Iron Mountain/Kingsford) and since TV6 has gone digital, in the morning I NEVER RECEIVE the signal! It is so frustrating that I cannot get my morning news or watch the TODAY show...I have DIRECTTV, and the only reason I kept my local cable channels was to watch TV6 as I am a teacher and need the local news. Is this going to get better?? Are you working on the signal?? If not, I would just cancel out my local cable all-together...

RE: FAQ

Posted by WLUC TV6, Negaunee Twp. - Friday, July 24, 2009 at 10:03 a.m.

Q - I have HD service through Charter, which is channel 785. When I watch the Today Show on HD channel 785, why at precisely 10 minutes to the hour and 10 minutes to the half hour does some one flick a switch and it goes from excellent clarity to bad reception? Also, whenever you put a notice of public interest on the bottom of the screen I also lose the HD service?

A - Whenever we need to insert local programming during NBC HD broadcasts, we need to switch our feed to standard definition. The upgrades necessary to be completely HD throughout our facility are very involved and expensive. Cameras, editors, switchers, keyers, routers, etc. We are working toward the integration of more HD gear, but it will take some time. We’re starting with an HD crawl system, weather warnings, and router upgrades yet this year. These will take care of most of these interruptions of HD service. We appreciate your interest and patience as we continue to improve our systems.

RE: FAQ

Posted by WLUC TV6, Negaunee Twp. - Friday, July 24, 2009 at 10:03 a.m.

Q - We would like to know when or if you will be moving your tower or increasing your power so we can again receive your signal. It appears that we are going backward in time, since going digital we can no longer get your broadcast at our camp in Hardwood. We do get channel 10 and channel 13 but cannot receive your signal.

A - We hope to increase our antenna height and increase power later this year. We do not have a date for this yet … but we hope we can accomplish this before winter sets in.

RE: FAQ

Posted by WLUC TV6, Negaunee Twp. - Friday, July 24, 2009 at 10:02 a.m.

Q - We live 12 miles north of the lower entry to the Portage Canal. Your maps show this is out of your signal’s reach. Is there anything I can do to receive your off-air signal?

A - The digital signal can and has reached beyond your location. It does however depend on many other factors. Height, type, and size of the antenna … terrain … obstructions (trees, buildings, hills, etc) … antenna amplifier … etc. It will be a challenge from your location, but it may be possible with the proper equipment.

RE: FAQ

Posted by WLUC TV6, Negaunee Twp. - Friday, July 24, 2009 at 10:02 a.m.

Q - Are you going to change your logo to TV35 from TV6? Seems likely since channel 6 will be dead?

A - Though we broadcast on Channel 35, we “tell” receivers and TV’s to display our channels as 6-1, 6-2, and so on. We are and will always be TV6.

RE: FAQ

Posted by WLUC TV6, Negaunee Twp. - Friday, July 24, 2009 at 10:01 a.m.

Q - I scanned in my channels earlier in the week and received channel 6. Now after the switch I do not receive it even after rescanning. What could be the problem?

A - You could be too near the digital “cliff effect” where you either get us clear or get nothing. You may need to simply move/turn your antenna slightly one way or the other (in minor steps so the receiver has time to decode the digital information) or add an antenna mounted amplifier. We did not change anything within our digital signal on June 12.

RE: FAQ

Posted by WLUC TV6, Negaunee Twp. - Friday, July 24, 2009 at 10:01 a.m.

Q - Where are you on the FM radio now?

A - Our analog audio signal could be picked up on 87.7 on some FM radios. There is no analog signal available now, and digital signal can not be received on FM radios.

RE: FAQ

Posted by WLUC TV6, Negaunee Twp. - Friday, July 24, 2009 at 10:00 a.m.

Q - I live in Powers, Michigan (75 miles from your tower), and I am stuck with receiving local channels coming out of Green Bay, Wisconsin. WHY? Also, I think we should be able to receive your signal with a converter box, but we can’t. Will we ever be able to receive channel 6 again?

A - Menominee County is outside of our FCC designated market. We’re trying to investigate the possibility of us being allowed within that county since we are significantly viewed. Too many factors are involved to be able to tell you for sure if you will be able to receive us when we increase our power and possibly our tower height.

RE: FAQ

Posted by WLUC TV6, Negaunee Twp. - Friday, July 24, 2009 at 9:59 a.m.

Q - I emailed Direct TV about having channel 6 as my local channel they told me that they are unable to reach an agreement with channel 6. If this is so, were does the problem exist - with Direct TV or with Channel 6? I see Dish Network offers channel 6. Did they also have to reach an agreement?

A - We presently have agreements with both dish companies to house their equipment within our building and provide our and other local stations to them via this equipment for their customers. Dish Network has completed their buildout and is currently providing stations in Standard Definition (SD). DirecTV is still working on their buildout and because they will be offering their customers High Definition (HD) content, they needed to have additional fiber resources installed by ATT which has delayed their launch until possibly the beginning of October, hopefully a little sooner. We’ve found that Customer Service Representatives (CSR’s) do not know what is what until after the launch has been completed. There really is no problem other than it is taking longer to install better feed systems to provide their customers more and/or better services.

RE: FAQ

Posted by WLUC TV6, Negaunee Twp. - Friday, July 24, 2009 at 9:59 a.m.

Q - We have installed a digital converter box and cannot receive any channels, except Channel 13. What type of antenna would you recommend to install to be able t receive Channel 6?

A - We recommend a UHF/VHF combination antenna (our analog signal was VHF, but our digital signal is UHF … Channel 13 is VHF). For help with which one, how high of gain, or if you would benefit from an amplifier, go to our website and use the tool on our DTV page (http://www.uppermichiganssource.com/community/dtv.aspx) to help you choose an antenna and get the exact direction to point it in based on your specific location.

when and if will it get better?

Posted by still waiting, norway - Thursday, July 23, 2009 at 10:36 p.m.

Well, here's the final conclusion after a month of fiddling with anything and everything(bought an antenna, tried a bigger one and raised/lowered, and pointed in every direction known to man),I get the 3 public channels perfectly, and finally last weekend, I was able to get channel 10(antenna has to be in a perfect spot, no room for error!), I get a signal strength of 27-29, 28 is where it comes in loud and clear, so sometimes I lose it a little, but it is veiwable most of the time. On TV 6, I get a signal strenght of 0,naada,nothing, zip. So, the two towers (6 and 10) are nearly in the same spot, my conclusion is that TV 6, is not putting out nearly the signal that channel 10 is, and since 10 is also VHF, don't give us the story that "UHF is stronger than VHF, thats why you can't get our channel" I will ask this question, and I know it won't be answered, because none of them ever are. CAN YOU GIVE THE VEIWERS A TIME FRAME OF IF AND WHEN YOU ARE GOING TO RAISE THE TOWER OR DO WHATEVER IT IS SO PEOPLE IN THE UP CAN RECEIVE YOUR CHANNEL?? I know it's expensive and all, but just give us an answer if your going to do it.

I was able to get the TV 6 digital signal this morning and also the HD National feed over the air. Does seem a little weak though as it did fade in and out a few times. Is this just a hit and miss thing? Has anyone been able to get TV 6 via satellite yet? What is the cost?

Conversion Sucks!

Posted by cheryl Peters, Chassell - Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at 10:07 p.m.

Since the "digital conversion" I have less TV channels!
I got 3,6 & 13 always before, even odd ones every now & then (27,12??)I jumped the hoops for the 1st conversion, did the test with your station & all was good.
Then the deadline is extended & we hear "some might loose the signal" This should have been told before people spend money on conversion equipment!
Now I have all of NMU 13 WITHOUT any interruption of signals at all times.
Your signal is "weak" or out 98% of the time. the 2% that it is up it is weak and has no picture or sound! Wow good conversion! Go Public TV! To bad they can't carry the local news!
Cheryl

Where did the digital signal go?

Posted by Brad Dakota, Baraga - Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at 4:57 p.m.

Prior to the conversion I was recieving your digital signal very well with my UHF/VHF antenna with a booster. I was even able to get the HD signal when available on the national programming. I figured I would be all set for the conversion. Since the conversion I get nothing. What happened?

TV 6 on Satelite

Waivers for NBC programming

TV-6 NO Longer my favorite Channel

Posted by Scott Schulz, Skandia, MI - Wednesday, July 01, 2009 at 9:56 a.m.

MNU Channels come in great!
Channel 10 Great!
TV-6 is marginal at best, most of the time I can't watch it as it keeps going out.
Smooth transition, I think not. TV-6 not at full power! Channel 3 not does not even have a transmitter in the area.

I was ready, where were you?

Where did your signal go???

Posted by Jenny Magli, RUmely - Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at 1:26 p.m.

Hello,
Before the conversion we got your signal crystal clear. After the conversion we got your signal fine(through the converter box) but it would drift & we would lose the signal. Sometime the signal would last all day and other days it would be on and off. For several weeks now we get NO signal and can't find your signal anywhere. We only get channel 13 Public TV now. What happened???
We really miss being able to view TV-6

Thanks for any info. you can provide.

Fading in and out

Posted by GEORGE SCHMIDT, 595 WAGNER LK RD, IRON RIVER MI - Monday, June 29, 2009 at 7:41 p.m.

We bought the convertor, and then an antenna from radio shack that works in fair weather. When the weather is like today (June 29, 2009) or when we have interference with our dish, WLUC also fades out (which it didn't today). But the signal strength goes from 56 to zero, then in the 30's, down to zero, and up in the 40's to 50's, and then back to zero, making it unable to watch. If you have a clue how to help us, we would really appreciate it. Right now it is so hard to watch that we have to turn it off. And we like channel 6!

Where did TV6 go?

Posted by Jan Wesselius, Chatham - Sunday, June 28, 2009 at 12:42 p.m.

I got a roof top antenna from Menards last year. With it got TV6 crystal clear, along with 13, and 3. 10 came in fuzzy. With the DTV conversion box and outside antenna all I get now is 13, crystal clear. All 3 channels of PBS. No TV6, 3 or 10. I understand that 3 is from Trenary and they are not directing their signal north, but why no TV6, you used to come in clear, now nothing.

No ch 6??

Posted by Jim Johnson, Gwinn - Saturday, June 27, 2009 at 7:41 p.m.

Before the conversion we used to get channel 6. Now we only get 13. What is going on, or what are we doing wrong? We have pointed our ant with a compass acording to your web site...Also, What is a waiver I have been hearing about?

waivers

Posted by robin juchemich, U.S.A. - Saturday, June 27, 2009 at 5:37 p.m.

why doesnt tv 6 grant temporary waivers to direct tv customers until tv 6 is ablle to get the towers up and stronger signal, then when they are ready we would know who receives it and who does not. note wjmn granted a waiver to us because they are not ready either butthey are waiting for a permit from the f c c that they filed for in 2008.

We're supposed to point where?

Posted by Ross Hogan, 328 north road negaunee - Saturday, June 27, 2009 at 2:37 p.m.

We had everything set up for the conversion a couple of days before the final date and everything worked perfectly, signal was 25-30% on 6 and 30-40% on 13.
We lost 6 the day of conversion and it took a week or more before we found it again. We have still had no problem with 13, it's very stable and seldom has any signal breakdown. Channel 6 seems to depend on weather and time of day whether we can get a signal at all. Even when we seem to get a good signal, the signal strength rises and falls by 10-15% on a 2-3 minute cycle. It's never stable.
I've looked everywhere I can think of, left messages for TV6 that get no response, and the only answers I've gotten were from Radio Shack employees.
But, no one can tell me why antenna web tells me to point at 223 degrees, where I get 0 reception on any station. I have to point at 250-260 degrees to get a peak 18% signal on 6. It shows us very close to correct location on the map feature, so why is the angle so wrong and why does 13 come in so much better?

Poor Signal

Posted by Kim Peterson, Trenary - Monday, June 22, 2009 at 8:31 a.m.

Like many others without cable access we bought all of the digital equipment recommended but still cannot receive tv6. When I checked with the person that sold me our new digital antenna on-line, and miles from and direction of the tv6 broadcast antenna from our home, he said we had it set properly. He also told me that he was familiar with our NBC affiliate WLUC and that it was currently broadcasting at 83kw and that full power is 1000kw. He also asked if I could find out when tv6 is going to full power and to let him know.If full power is indeed 1000kw when can we expect it to begin?

We live in between Gladstone and Brampton. We can receive channels 3, 11, 13.1, 13.2, 13.3, 38.1, 38.2, and 38.3 - but no channel 6 since June 12th. We tried both the AntennaWeb and AnennaPoint websites to position our antennas, and we've rescanned our converter boxes several times - none of it's worked as far as getting channel 6. Is the station having any prolems with its signal? Thanks.

men to the moon, pin point a target 1/2 way across the world...you get my drift....
We signed up for dish Monday. We were told that they would be broadcasting tv6 on July 8th and the other local channels soon to follow.
I wonder what the real percentage of people w/o their local channels is..IMO I think it's more than 30%..
And I still haven't received an answer to my question..why could I receive tv6's digital test signals and nothing now?

WE RECEIVED 13.1, 13.2, and 13.3 from day 1. I made several phone calls. We subscribe to Direct TV, but are unable to receive local viewing from them. For the past 2 days channel 10 has been coming in around mid-morning, then it's off again at 6:30???
We have a 35 foot antenna and bought the converter
boxes. Why the change, if the service will not be
good? We had something that worked!!
I also found out that I could purchase ABC, CBS, NBS
and FOX brought in from NYC from Direct TV. So we
went ahead and did that, only to find out so far that we can only get CBS. Direct TV told us that ABC had denied us (Direct TV has to send in a waiver to get permission from our local affiliates to give us the reception). Well....so far CBS has given permission, 1 has denied and 2 are still considering!!
I can understand about contracts, etc. BUT WE MISS OUT LOCAL CHANNELS!!!

Channel 10's on but not what it's suppose to be. Are we in danger again of loosing these unless we pay? We all should get credited on our bills!

Why is it that I can get all three PUBLIC TV channels and occasionally ABC/Channel 10 but I can't get a strong enough signal from Upper Michigan's Source? Why weren't there signal strength requirements for the stations when they went to digital? I only live twenty miles south of Marquette and can't get a signal from a station in Marquette. Crazy!

Missing TV6

Posted by Sandy Swiedals, Michigamme - Thursday, June 18, 2009 at 1:45 p.m.

I like most others writing on this website can only get the 3 PBS stations. We can even turn our antennae 360 degrees and they come in at every direction. TV6 advertisers sure aren't getting their money's worth now so many U.P. residents can't get channel 6. I would like to know if there is anyone in the U.P. that can get TV6 with an antennae and a converter box.

Finally got antenna turned where I can get Marquette PBS Perfect, and Rhinelander's NBC, but still no TV 6. My newer TV ( 2yrs Old) has pulled in other signals, but no pic's yet. The 1st converter box would not tune in PBS. I believe that there are differences in tuners installed in some of these box's and TV's... which could be causing scan problems, but out of 3 diff way's of scanning, still no TV 6.

TV 6 was on PBS's Media Meet and they knew they were going to loose 30 % of their viewers. I still don't understand why PBS can afford to GAIN Viewers, and Marquette NBC can afford to LOOSE Viewers. I still have not gotten an answer on where on the Mghz dial TV 6 is suppose to be ????

I am also getting the 13-1 2 and 3 with excellent quality even moving the antenna a few degrees in either direction. I have a forty foot tower and no trees blocking the sight. I have bumped and rescanned over and over but I can not get as much as a blip out of 35 or 6-1. I can get a small signal out of Rhinelander although not enough to watch. It will block and stall. I have an older Channelmaster VHF-UHF antenna that I will replace if I have some degree of certainty to get more than 13. Will a double bow tie antenna be the best way to go here? Will it cover the full range of frequencies now on the air waves? Thanks for your time.

We were elated when we now get WNMU 13-1, 13-2, & 13-3, all wonderfully. However we are very disappointed that we no longer get WLUC 6-1 or anything like it. I am lead to believe that now the problem is with WLUC's wattage and tower height. These should have been forseen and taken care of. We have a brand new TV, one of the best UHF/VHF digital off air antennas available, new coaxle cable all over and even a new in line signal amplifier. I don't know WNMU's power output, but it seems hard to believe that it would be much higher than WLUCs. Also, I know that each entities transmitter sites are within 2 miles distance of my house the way the crow flies. That is around 52 miles each. My antenna is rated for 100 miles UHF and 150 miles VHF. Prior to the final closing of analog, we got 6-1 great, in fact just as good as on a dish. We also got Escanaba quite well. What gives WLUC ? For the longest time you have been asking us, are you ready ? We think you should have been asking yourself the same question. Come on and get your act together as soon as possible so we can get back to enjoying the same good local programming and news that we have come to enjoy in the past.

Digital Signal

Posted by yoopr 1, Iron County - Sunday, June 14, 2009 at 2:25 p.m.

I was playing around with my antenna direction last night along with my converter box.
I live in a very low area surrounded by some pretty good hills.
I got 2 channels from Rhinelander, Wi(Small town) and the picture was clear as a bell and when I did a antenna Strenghth option it was only around 22%.
Rhinelander is a lot further away from me than Marquette and WJFW is a relatively small station.
I'm beginning to think that WLUC did this switchover on the Cheap when a Small town station can give a strong enough signal for me to watch a clear picture while the Strongest(other than WNMU) station that the U.P has can't even give me a signal when I'm only around 50+ miles away from the tower. Don't give me the tale that I'm not getting it because of hills because I get all 3 WNMU channels perfectly and also WJFW Rhinelander. Also WJMN is working hard to get a large tower in the U.P
I guess WLUC only cares about people in Marquette and the surrounding area.
I've watched 6 since the early 60's.

Interesting-Yesterday I was kind of bored prior to the Wings game so I did a Channel Scan(Not with a Converter Box) with just my TV(2 yrs old) and my antenna which I bought last year.
I got the Usual 3-6-10 channels but then up popped 13.1,13.2, and 13.3.
It seems that each of these WNMU channels broadcast a different program from the other.
13.1 is the Usual WNMU channel. 13.2 is the WNMU HD channel, and 13.3 is WNMU PL. I have no clue what PL Means and the pictures are brilliant. I have HD with my Direct TV and these channels almost seem better than that.
Anyway-Every time 6 did those HD Tests my TV Failed the Test. Now I'm getting WNMU HD.
Why? And to others who have failed "The Test" maybe you'll get the HD Also.

I have a great picture with analog even being 49 miles from your tower, but during the test, nothing. I have a 50 ft tower, rotor, tower mounted amplifier, Digital TV. Does this mean no more Channel 6 after the switch ?

Help with installation of boxes

Do you know if there is any company or person that can do the installation for individuals? We are seniors and don't understand how to deal with this situation. We have purchased the boxes but can't understand how to set them up. Thank you.

Picture Size

Posted by S. Schulz, Skandia - Monday, June 01, 2009 at 7:52 p.m.

When watching the analog channet, all is well with my picture. When I switch to the digital channel, the picture is small and has lots of dead space on the sides or I switch the picture ratio and it fills the TV screen but the top and bottom of the picture are cut off. As I was watching the weather today Carl's head and the TV 6 logo were cut off.
Is somthing off with the Digital Picture Size? I repeat, All is good on the analog channel.

Yesterday I installed my converter box and followed their instructions, but I could not get it to work. I have an outside uhf-vhf antenna and receive channel 6 very clearly. After I did a scan of the channels, I received a "no progam found" message on the TV screen. I did a antenna check with the remote and the signal strength was "0" on all channels. I redid the connections, tried some different cables, and did a dozen more scans, but did not get anything different. I disconnected the box, plugged the antenna directly into the TV as before and had beautiful, clear reception. Any idea what this means?

TELEVISION: ANALOG
CONVERTER: MAGNAVOX
ANTENNA: RABBIT EARSW/ UHF/VHF CAPABILITY
With rabbit ears on analog only I used to receive channel 6 and not get so much as a hint of Channel 12.
After installing a converter box and rabbit ears I now receive channel 12 and NO channel 6. Tried turning my rabbit ears to the required direction per the website with no luck.

Dish Net /TV 6?

Posted by J. Davidson, Felch - Saturday, May 30, 2009 at 7:40 p.m.

We cannot receive digital using the converter boxes.

We called Dish Net to see if they were going to carry your local channel and they are not aware of such action and told us to contact your station?

Will we be able to receive your channel via DishNet or even Direct TV; at this point we are willing to change satelite services to the first one to pick you up.

It is frustrating that we cannot pickup your station, updates and direction is appreciated.

I CALLED DISHNETWORK AND WAS TOLD I AM NOT ABLE TO RECEIVE THE DIGITAL SIGNAL FOR LOCAL CHANNELS. I CAN PURCHASE A PACKAGE WITH NY AND OTHER CHANNELS. IS THIS BECAUSE THE NEW TOWER IS NOT UP? I HAVE AN HD TV. I UNDERSTOOD I WOULD NOT NEED A CONVERTER BOX SINCE WE HAVE THE HD TV AND WOULD BE ABLE TO SEE TV6. WHEN YOU RAN YOUR TEST WE DID NOT GET RECEPTION..YOUR INFO WILL BE VERY HELPFUL AND WILL I HAVE TO PURCHASE THE LOCAL STATIONS RECEPTION?

Up to about 6 weeks ago I was able to watch digital 6.1 and 6.2. What happened to your signal? Are you currently broadcasting digital 6.1,6.2? I bought an inexpensive antenna on ebay. It started out working just fine. Then nothing.Did you reduce power? I can receive a snowy analog signal. I don't know whether to put up my original VHF UHF antenna and purchase a booster or what. Please let me know.

Scanning Mhz

When my converter scans it does so in Mega Hertz... I can not find TV 6. What is the Mhz freq I should be expecting to see while doing a scan.?? I have had some freq show numbers but not enough to lock in a signal. I cannot manually punch in a channel. Rhinelanders NBC is the only channel that scan's in.
I have already invested in a new antenna 2 yrs ago, and last summer I put up a tower and a rotor. I can get NBC and PBS analog, but can't find you on digital.

"Small Picture" response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at 10:31 a.m.

It is showing you the entire HD (16:9) picture on your analog (4:3) set. Some converters allow you to set them to show the center cut of the HD on the analog, thereby going full screen and cutting off the sides. Check your manual to see if you have this feature.

I have a converter box. On occasion we have had to switch to using it when TV6 won't come in. Why is the picture so much smaller? When we switch it is at least five inches smaller all around the edge. We have a 31 inch screen and the picture comes in as a 20.

"Signal Strength" response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at 10:25 a.m.

No we have not increased power or height yet. We can't move the antenna up until the analog is down and tower crews are very booked due to the DTV transitions throughout the country. We do not yet have the additional transmitter needed to make the power increase.

Have you increased the signal strength and raised your tower yet? I can almost receive your digital signal right now.

"Big Bay TV 6 Reception" response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at 10:09 a.m.

It is too difficult for anyone to know whether any certain person or household will be able to pick us up since everyone's situation is different and even our experience with DTV propagation and reception is limited. You may need a better/higher antenna, possibly an antenna mounted booster, maybe adjust your antennas direction, you may not need to do anything, or as previously stated you may be blocked by the hills. And with our and others broadcasts being changed and improved still this year....that all could change too. Like I said....too difficult to say for sure.

Getting in on this late in the game. Have digital TV, roof top antennae, and converter box and live in Big Bay. Based on below information, it suggests that I would need to buy an expensive antennae or get the dish. Any new information on this? I don't want to bother with hooking up the converter box if it isn't going to work.

We do not have a solid on-air date of when the local channels will be available on either system yet. At this time I do not believe they will be available by June 12th, but I've been wrong/surprised before. Best efforts are being made to supply all local stations to the dish companies, but it depends greatly on how and when each station makes their digital signals available.

"Magnavox Converter boxes" response

Yes, if you are within range of DTV signals, have everything hooked up as it should be, and the antenna pointed at the desired station(s), you should see the stations come up after scanning for channels.

We have 2 DTV boxes and we have been trying to connect these boxes and we are having more problems than one can imagine. Something that has been advertised so simple to connect and easy directions to follow.. My husband is pretty electronically inclined, but not with this. He is on the internet in the evening looking for answers and help and to no avail, still frustrated. This past weekend we even went and purchased and new antenna, as that is what some sites had said that is needed to make these boxes work. He even called the 800# on the box that we purchased the converter box. She walked him through the installation and it did not work, then she told him to repeat the setup for about 3 times and it still didn't work, then she told him to unplug the box for 3 minutes and then repeat the wizard and we did that and did not work. We decided that she did not know what else to do and that was her answer to get her off the phone.

We have Magnavox TB110MW9 boxes that we purchased at Wal-mart.

Once the converter box has been set up and scanned are we suppose to see the channel on the TV?

"Direct TV" response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at 9:00 a.m.

Dish Network and DirecTV customers will be contacted by their provider as soon as the systems and programming are in place. At that time they will find out if anything needs to be changed or if permission to add locals is all that is needed. We and the dish companies do not have an actual on-air date for the locals since they depend on outside vendors to install the fiber feeds. Rest assured, when we and/or they know, we'll let everyone know.

WHEN WILL WLUC TV BE ON DIRECT SATELLITE? I HAVE HEARD THAT WHEN THIS HAPPENS, WE WILL NEED ANOTHER SATELLITE TO GET LOCAL CHANNELS. IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, WOULD APPRECIATE AN ANSWER. THANK YOU

I have Direct tv and I had to talk to them about some stuff and the guy said he was Technical Support so I mentioned to him that WLUC was going to be on Direct TV Local. Obviously Direct TV has all of the equipment you have which is associated with your phone number. I asked him what was involved with getting WLUC on Direct so he looked up what equipment I had(I guess they have different dishes for different programming and Accessories) and he told me that the equipment I had wouldn't require anything additional.
He also said that once 6 starts broadcasting to Direct TV it might take 48-72 hours before you get it on Direct.
Sooooo-Call Direct and ask them if you need anything additional to your Dish with them

Since Big Bay is behind the mountain range between it and most centrally located broadcast towers, it is near impossible for signals to reach the area. "new tv but can't get picture on tests" response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC - Thursday, April 30, 2009 at 7:34 a.m.

The antenna needs to be a UHF/VHF antenna pointed at our tower SE of Republic. For distant or terrain challenged areas one may need to add an amplifier and/or height. Since we broadcast both analog and digital signals all the time, tests can be done at any time. Our digital will show up as 6.1 and the analog as simply 6.

We recently purchased a new digital TV, we receive our TV6 on an antena on the roof and do not receive the tests of digital that are put out by TV six. What can we do.

Dish companies are installing equipment right now to supply local channels to our market. Not sure when exactly, but within months instead of years or never.

We like many others, live in the country. Cable TV is not available where we live. We have had a dish for more than 20 years. Our local Fox is from LA, ABC is NYC. We already know we only see Packer games when nationally televised. Direct TV will not unlock the FOX feed from Green Bay because of our zip code. Norway, just 8 miles from us can receive it, based on their zip code. Now, we tried the converter box, with the roof top and got nothing. We are going to have NO local news & weather. We will not get CBS or NBC locally. Is there any hope of Direct TV carrying TV6? Thanks for your help. Kathie

"Loss of Channel 6 reception" response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC - Thursday, April 30, 2009 at 7:19 a.m.

Not having years of experience to know exactly how everything will be affecting digital signals, it's tough for anyone to say for sure what will happen and where. We've had viewers report they've picked us up almost 100 miles away and others stating they can't pick us up 20 miles away. Terrain and other obstructions are the biggest culprit, especially since DTV is an all or nothing situation. Some people in your area have been successful picking us up, others have not. The dish companies are however installing systems to provide local stations to their customers within our market.

We live 7 miles south of Florence. We have received a good signal from your station using a roof antenna. We use DIRECTV. We are being told by various people; sales, service, etc. that we are in a "dead zone" and will lose both your station and the Rhinelander NBC affiliate. I am presently applying with DIRECTV to have them furnish NBC on a fee basis. I already do that for the other networks. Could you possibly just answer the question as to if we will get your station's signal after we get our new TV with all the required equipment? I'm included in the host of frustrated citizens of northern WI and the UP. I'd appreciate any comments or suggestions you could supply. I am thanking you in advance. Keep up your work with the politicos.

"not alone" response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC - Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at 8:06 a.m.

Yes it can be very frustrating. I think many of the problems people are having is due to the "perfect" nature of this medium. Everything needs to be correct in line if it is to work properly. The right antenna aimed in the exact direction with the correct gain for your distance from our towers, the amplifier installed at the antenna and powered from inside the house properly, the converter hooked up and programmed correctly, or the DTV setup and programmed correctly, etc. Consulting your owners manuals or other parts of this website could help make sure you have all your digital ducks in a row. Also, if your signal from analog 6 is snowy, chances are you won't be able to pick up our digital signal in your area.

i thought i was alone in not recieving a signal after hooking up 2 diffrent convertor boxes and installing a new uhf rooftop anntena with an amplifier and being told thing should be crystal clear in my area, but it seems everyone is having the same problems. no place to go for clear answers or solutions. the signal is no diffrent if i have the amplifier plugged in or unplugged, and with the convertor boxes turned on i get no signal at all. i do recieve a snowy picture of channel 6 if i run it through my vcr. very frustrating.

"Digital signal" response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC - Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at 7:50 a.m.

We have been and continue to tell people that we broadcast on channel 35.1, but we program our datastream to tell your TV to show us as 6.1. Also as discussed previously, there are too many variable TV hookups and configurations to list them all or to say "this is how it is" because they all differ from one another. Every owners manual will cover each subject well for each TV or DTV individually.

If your TV has a digital tuner you can program you channels to tenths. Example 6.1, 3.1 etc.
Presently I can receive digital channel 6 on 6.1 only on cold clear nights. I live 15 miles east of Munising. Why doesn,t TV 6 inform people that they are presently broadcasting digital on 6.1 ? Some TV's are digital but do not have a digital tuner. Also some TV's have different antennae inputs on the TV, one for digital and one for analog.

"no signal - when hooked up" response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC - Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at 7:43 a.m.

An outdoor antenna is always going to give you a better signal and is especially important when bringing in DTV siganls.

We hooked up our boxes yesterday and it says no signal. Did I do something wrong or am I just not receiving anything. I'm 20-30 miles away from most stations according to the antenna web. I am using an indoor antenna with vhf and uhf capabilities.

Thanks for the help.

"Troubles will digital converter box" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC - Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at 7:40 a.m.

Your antenna may be a VHF only antenna and will need to be changed to a UHF/VHF model. You may be on the edge of our digital coverage area, so an amplifier mounted at the antenna may be needed. Or the antenna may need to be aimed a bit more critically since DTV is an all or nothing situation.

Tonight 12/7/09, we hooked up the new digital converter box. Much to our surprise TV6 was not picked up by the digital coverter box and we normally get a strong signal by an antenna. I read one of the statements on your site that helps with using digital conversion and it said that if you normally get it by antenna, the signal should be picked up fine. We could use some suggestions or tips about where to go from here.

I didn't think your UHF signal would "bend" over the hills to the north of us but it does. I will be testing this antenna preamp system from lake level in the Keweenaw (Lac La Belle) and will let you know if it works from there.

Digital conversion

Posted by Gail Damaschke, Carney, MI - Sunday, April 05, 2009 at 3:16 p.m.

During the broadcast of E.R. on 4/2/09, there was a segment stating that some counties in the U.P. may be affected. Menominee county, which is where Carney is located, was one of them. TV6 is the only NBC channel we have. I am a devoted fan of TV6 news and some of the NBC shows. How will we be able to view any of these when the conversion comes thru? We were told that if we were a cable subscriber that we would be covered on conversion, however, when the tests were performed prior to the 2/19 deadline, it stated that our tv was not ready. We didn't purchase a digital conversion box because we were supposed to come thru the coversion unscathed. Now, the coupons are all gone and we will be left without our local news and no NBC. Still ZERO signal with my new converter box

Posted by Mike Clardy, 350 Cardinal Road Michigamme, MI - Wednesday, April 01, 2009 at 4:30 p.m.

I tried last summer to receive the UHF digital signal WLUC sends out using a converter box I purchased and received no signal. I have a great VHF signal and picture and the antenna is for VHF and UHF signals.

Last week I tried again with a newer converter box and still received ZERO signals when scanning for all the stations.

I WLUC going to put another UHF antenna in an area that west Marquette County viewers be able to get the new digital broadcasts? I am on a north-facing hill right on the lake but cannot put an outside antenna out high enough to get over the hill.

All FM signals are good in my area, there are loads of ghosts on WNMU-TV Ch 13, but is watchable.

I will miss all the local programming if this is not resolved after June 12th - and hope it IS going to be resolved.

Can WLUC continue with their VHF frequency? Our area does have lots of hills, valleys, and lots of areas not covered by cable and it seems ridiculous to lose so many viewers as your ratings depend on viewers!!

Please let me know if you have any other ideas.

Thanks!

Unable to get local channels

Posted by Laura Nelson, Felch - Friday, March 27, 2009 at 10:21 a.m.

We have lived in our house in Felch for 9 years. We have DirectTV and our waivers for the network stations have been denied. We did without them for the first 5 years and then bought an outside antenea which allowed us to get TV6 and on a good day CBS but never ABC. Up until last month that is,now we get nothing. We bought a converter box and it scans for the channels and comes up with nothing. Are we going to have to get a different antenea? Which by the way will be at my expense and not the governments or the networks. If that is the case I guess I will have to do without my local channels.

Help!! Does dish antenna work with digital convertor box?

Posted by billet doux, DC Metro - Sunday, March 08, 2009 at 10:30 a.m.

When I moved to this place it had a dish on the roof and nothing else, just dish. Instead of installing another antenna, I used this dish as an antenna. I am not using any box or something. I have no subscription and, really, I use OTA. I can get some 5-6 public broadcasting station, with not a great quality. My TV is old too. I installed a Zenith digital convertor. It can not detect any station at all, neither digital, nor analog. Any suggestion?? Do I need to do something esle?

Will HWY 13, 440 area get a signal come June? I was told not to purchase a new rooftop antenna due to the fact that our area probably wont get a signal once digital is up to full power. We have always received 3, 6 and PBS with some interference. Right now, no digital signal is received with converter box. Please advise before I purchase any new equipment and so I can advise elderly neighbors. If we will get a signal, how do I figure out what type of roof top antenna I have now?

Even Better Today

Posted by In TheSticks, Chatham - Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at 3:10 p.m.

I don't know what's going on, but the signal is even better today. It's anchored firmly at 40%. The only other channel we can get a signal from is WNMU (33), but it won't tune in. It just bounces around like WLUC used to—0,15,0,15,0,15,0,27,0,15 . . .

Finally getting a signal (sort of)

Posted by In TheSticks, Chatham - Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at 6:50 p.m.

The signal meter still bounces between zero and fifteen, but there is a picture now. 6.2 is just about watchable. It just stutters a bit. 6.1 is no good. But at least we get picture and sound now. This is the first channel to come in. Did something change at the tower recently? If 6.1 is going to be the main programming, I hope that improves soon. Pretty glad the date was pushed back as this is the original deadline and only one channel is working. The other stations need to do whatever you guys did.

Reading one comment, it sounds like maybe you have to have a uhf antenna instead of a vhf?? Mine is vhf. Is that possible? I went up on the roof turned my antenna all the way around, got nothing. I receive the TV6 analog signal, and during your dtv tests, it tells me that my tv is ready for the switch. My picture and sound were crystal clear. However, for some reason, TV6 dissapeared altogether yesterday(February 10th), I checked with a co-worker who has the same setup as I do, and he said the same thing happened to him. I have not changed anything with my setup or placement of my tv/antenna, what happened with the signal?

Digital Conversion

Posted by Bev Diamond, W7513 Upper Pine Creek Rd Iron Mountain Mi. 49801 - Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at 5:18 p.m.

We purchased a converter box to allow us to receive the new digital signal. Once hooked up, we found that we are unable to get the signal. I am wondering if we are not getting a strong enough signal, due to our location. I believe the tower that sends the signal is located on Millie Hill and maybe because of our location the digital signal sails right over us.
Could this be possible? If so we will be in need of a waiver to allow us to recieve NBC (hopefully WLUC TV) but if not, we are still interested in getting one of the national NBC channels.
I will anxiously await a response or posting.

Tests ?

Posted by Neil Lyndh, Negaunee - Thursday, February 05, 2009 at 11:37 a.m.

Are you still running your "DTV Tests" on Tuesdays?
I have not seen them for the last two weeks.

The previous tests have been for too short a duration to do anything other that see if your set will automatically pick up a digital signal. There is no time to change the channel to 35 or 6-1 to complete a through reception test.

A longer duration full power test(s) would be much more helpful than the short ones that were done.

Thank you.

Using a rooftop antenna and pre- amplifier with a new TV we had been receiving digital 6 pretty reliably until a few days ago. As of Super Bowl night it has been gone for several days. Is this a transmission problem or is it on our end? We still have analog 6 but have heard no mention of your having transmission troubles except a vague reference on "Ask the Experts" last week on Chan. 13. Thanks.

We rely on TV6 for the morning and evening news and weather. We have purchased a new HDTV and converter box. When we turn on the converter box and attempt to tune in TV6 we are greeted by a message that says no signal. Will we be able to recieve your digital signal in Gay? We do not have the option of subscribing to cable as it is not offered out here! We do currently receive the analog signal.

This might seem trivial

Posted by Joe Blanchard, Cornell MI - Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at 12:23 a.m.

I have a clock radio (quite a few years old) that receives TV station's audio only. Nice to wake up to for me. Will this transition affect its ability to "hear" the audio? I am guessing it will, but hard to tell as theres no testing for it that I know of going on.
Yes or maybe no? If yes, do I need a converter box for it? and I would wonder how that will work.
Not to add complexity to the question, but will the weather frequencies be affected too? It has a weather channel that tunes to the national weather service.

Thanks

Like many others, I believed the hype - all I needed was the easy-to-set-up converter box. Got it. With the coupon, only cost $10. But not so easy to set up and no instructions on how to incorporate a VCR/DVD player. Spent an hour or so trying all kinds of configurations and each results in "no signal." So if my TV reception goes out some cold day in February, I'm done with it. I may miss TV6 for a while, but I'll get over it. So long, TV.

signal

Posted by William Anderson, 64S County Road 442 - Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at 10:56 a.m.

I am still a bit confused, I live in an area where my reception for TV 6 is very snowy, yet when you run your test my TV shows I will recieve the digital signal when the change is made, I however have a neighbor who is about 1 mile away and he has a newer TV and his signal for TV 6 is very clear and his TV showed Not Ready. (I have ran the scan for the channels and the TV is setup correctly).
He doesnt have a uhf antennia and I do. I have a booster on my antennia (he doesnt) and without it I cant pick up CBS from Green Bay. So I guess I dont know how to help my neighbor other than wait until you change to digital then if he doesnt get TV 6 the only thing I know I could do to help him is advise him to purchase a newer vhf-uhf antennia and then I dont know that the advise would be good or correct.
My questions are, (1) if your test shows that he does not recieve the signal does that mean he wont get TV 6 when the analog is turned off? (2) If you are going to boardcast on channel 6 is that not a vhf channel and therefore he would not need to purchase a uhf antennia? (3) Why would anyone need a uhf antennia if they watch TV 6 on channel 6?

coupon expiration

Posted by James Kurtz, Alpha, Michigan - Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at 10:46 a.m.

We have asked for and received converter box coupons for our home and our elderly mother. One has been purchased and does not receive any signal from any station. Mother cannot really afford to pay for a dish and the loss of local stations will be very sad for her and others on limited income and limited ability to get out.
We do not want to purchase additional converter boxes, when it appears they will not work, however, if this can be fixed we would be willing to do so. If the President is able to get an extension on the February 17 deadline, we would like to have an extension on the coupon.
I find your answers hard to find and they don't really give us what we need to know. We do not want to lose TV6, however it appears that will happen. It is hard to believe that this is in the best interests of rural residents in this country.

According to AntennaWeb, our compass reading is 104 degrees, and the "as the crow flies" distance is 50.1 miles with no obstructions. I have tweaked the antenna direction with a compass and also fiddled with the gain control on the amplifier (Radio Shack model). No change. Local rumor is that no matter what we do, we will not get the signal, since it doesn't survive beyond Covington. Question is: How far will your present digital signal reach to the west with no obvious obstructions?

I am presently applying with DIRECTV to have them furnish NBC on a fee basis. I already do that for the other networks. Could you possibly just answer the question as to if we will get your station's signal after we get our new TV with all the required equipment? I read one of the statements on your site that helps with using digital conversion and it said that if you normally get it by antenna, the signal should be picked up fine. Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Wednesday, January 07, 2009 at 5:33 p.m.

We are aware that this transition may mean that some people will lose their reception of TV6 and others. We continue to work with others to expand our abilities to provide the U.P. with important local coverage. In addition to our efforts with Congressman Stupak to get all the local stations available on dish networks, we're also working with other broadcasters and the Michigan Association of Broadcasters to possibly increase all local station reach by way of strategically placed digital low power translators, each able to rebroadcast all local stations. We appreciate your dedication to us and your appreciation for what we've provided over the years. We'll continue to do what we can to continue to do-so.

I have watched TV6 since your station began all those years ago. Tonight you tested your new DTV - our message was - This TV is not ready. We have purchased a new digital TV, the box, new UHF antenna and booster. Getting that message was very disappointing.
I have depended on TV6 for news, events, sales at businesses and countless other services. This feels, to me, like a death. I have two months to get used to the idea that after all this time, no more TV 6.

If we don't get your signal, I am sure many others won't either. This won't be good for your business or your advertisers. This is very unfortunate!!

"Reception on top of the Keweenaw Ridge?"

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Wednesday, January 07, 2009 at 5:21 p.m.

Again, tough to say for each situation/condition. We've heard from people in Chassel and Calumet that have received our digital signal, which were surprising to me. All we can suggest is to try.

Do you know if we will continue to get antenna reception here, on top of the ridge. I am ordering the converter box, but sometimes our signal is fuzzy here, sometimes it's great, with our rooftop antenna.

Unless you have obstructions or terrain blocking your way badly, you should be able to get us with a rooftop antenna pointed at us. Again, it's tough to say for sure though.

will we get a signal here with converter box?

"went from getting 4 channels to only 1" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Wednesday, January 07, 2009 at 5:09 p.m.

Unless one is close to a transmitter site, DTV and rabbit ear antennas don't seem to play well together. An outdoor/rooftop antenna capable of receiving UHF and VHF signals with a rotor is best. Your converter may not be able to receive analog stations so you may need to bypass it to continue to watch the analogs for now, and perhaps invest in an outdoor antenna for the future. Channel 3 is operating a low power digital from Escanaba and will continue to do-so until they convert their main site around midyear.

bought converter box and now i can only get channel 3. before with rabbit ears i could get 3,6. fox channel and a religion channel. I thought their was more channels we were suppose to get with the converter box, not less. when will i be able to at least get the channels i used to? cant even watch tv6 for school closings any more.

"Ontonagon can't get your station" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Wednesday, January 07, 2009 at 4:55 p.m.

I can't really say why she's lost the signal. We haven't changed anything on our anaolg broadcast. In the described location I'm rather surprised that she received us at all. If she has changed her system over to digital, the reason is that she is out of our digital signal range.

Lady from the far side of Ontonagon has always gotten your station, (channel 6,) through her antenna. Now she gets a screen that says it is unavailable. Why? She has antenna, not cable.

"DTV Reception" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Wednesday, January 07, 2009 at 4:48 p.m.

Thank you for the contribution. Yes, we've found varying results from the converters we've purchased as well. Yes the power increase should help, but an antenna mounted amp would probably clear up the other converters right away.

For anyone interested, I live in Aurora, WI. which according to the antenna web site is 45 miles from TV6 transmitter. I have a large directional anntena mounted above the roof with no pre-amplifier. After trying a few things here's what I found. I have tried 3 different converter boxes and found that the only one that would work with the weak signal we recieve is the one I bought at Walmart (magnavox). The other two I tried from radio shack would find the tv6 channel but could not play it on the TV without cutting in and out. Perhaps when the signal is stronger they would work. I contacted channel 3 (Escanaba) to see what there plans were for DTV and it sounds like after Feb 17 we will loose there analog signal and there digital change over won't be completed until sometime in late May. They have a weak DTV signal right now but just for the Escanaba area.

"DTV Test Trials" Response

We cannot operate at our full power until we receive and install our higher output power transmitter, due here midyear.

Everyone is scrambling to buy new tvs and antennas and many will be dissapointed come Feb. When are you going to run test trials full power so we can determine what our chances are of getting a signal?

"Waivers & Reception of Digital NBC Signal" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Wednesday, January 07, 2009 at 4:18 p.m.

Waivers are denied based on the ability to receive a local affiliate with a properly installed and pointed rooftop antenna. In your area you should be able to receive both our analog and digital signals with your current TV and without a converter box. If your antenna is capable of UHF reception, then you should be fine with the antenna you have. DirecTV also can provide the local stations via the dish, but has chosen not to. We hope Bart Stupak's bill will pass soon to force the dish companies to do so.Answers are provided in order of reception....not as often as we'd like, but we will answer all.

We currently receive a weak NBC TV6 signal via a gigantic, professionally installed rooftop antenna . We have DirecTV service and were denied a waiver that would have allowed us to receive a decent signal for NBC channels. As a result, we rarely watch NBC anymore. However, I would like to have the option and am wondering if my current antenna will be sufficient to receive the TV6 signal after it goes digital. I have a newer LCD TV with a digital tuner. Will I be able to use my current set up, or will I need a converter box and/or new antenna? By the way, I notice there are not answers for some of the comments in this section. Is there a reason some comments/questions don't get a response that's posted?

"antenna" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Wednesday, January 07, 2009 at 4:00 p.m.

Amasa is well within our coverage area. I'm not sure what map and test methods were used to make the map so I can't speak on what you saw there. I can say however that with non-flat terrain all reception suffers and is very difficult to predict. Without years of testing out in the field, it's very difficult to say for sure what will work where. We, like everyone else, are still learning as we go along. We will be increasing our power by 33% about midyear and are trying to receive approval to increase our antenna height in order to help cover more area with our signal. There are additional tools within our website that can help tune us in.

over the weekend we went to american to check out there tv's/well there was a map of the u.p. that using an outside antenna showing the areas that will get tv6 with the converter box.well guess what iron county isnt even in the loop they have listed.so are we all spending money on new gadgets to try and get this station to come in for nothing.we bought a new antenna.converter box.a booster.how much more do we have to spend before u guys finally tell us we are not going to receive our station.or maybe your program needs to be looked at for further up grades.if we are not going to get our station with the boxes please tell us so we can make other arrangements.we get 3 channels now with just the antenna, adding the box we dont get any.confused

"dtv" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Wednesday, January 07, 2009 at 3:48 p.m.

TV6 is broadcasting in Digital and Analog, so signal reception tests can be performed at any time. We do not broadcast from Millie Hill so I'm not sure what you mean. If your antenna receives UHF and VHF signals you need to point the antenna toward our site SE of Republic and rescan for DTV channels and make sure your TV is set to channel 3 or 4 depending on what your converter box requires.

I purchase our converter box to dtv. We recieve our signal from millie hill in Iron mtn michigan. I recieve no signal from the converter box. I have roof top antenna which give me a picture from tv 6 ( excllent.
Is tv broadcast in both digital and anolog now. Don't if I should be picking up digital signal now or not.

"Still confused" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Wednesday, January 07, 2009 at 3:42 p.m.

You will need a converter and possibly an outside antenna to receive an adequate DTV signal. If/When the dish companies decide to provide local stations to their customers, no antenna or converter will be necessary.

I've watched all the segments, and read all the comments, but still don't know if I'll receive the digital signal. I have a TV that is "cable ready" but not hi-def; I subscribe to Dish Network, but receive TV 6 with a "rabbit ear" antenna. While watching the segments running on air, there was never a time I could NOT see TV 6. Does that mean I'll be OK, or will I need a converter?

"Wjil I get it" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Wednesday, January 07, 2009 at 3:39 p.m.

Charter provides both an analog and HD TV6 signal to its customers so you should see no difference from current service.

We have Chartier as our cable provider. Our T.V. is an older model that does not have a digital tuner. Will this signal convert to my T.V. anyway?

"MS" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Wednesday, January 07, 2009 at 3:35 p.m.

TV6 is now providing one brief test during every newscast on every Tuesday up to the transition date of Feb. 17th, 2009.

When will TV6 do another DTV test?

"confused here to" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Wednesday, January 07, 2009 at 3:32 p.m.

It could be a number of things. Our digital signal is UHF, not VHF like our analog channel 6 so the proper antenna is important as well as pointing it directly at the intended station to receive. As previously mentioned, there are tools to help with this on our website. The TV it's hooked up to needs to be on channel 3 or 4, depending on what the converter is looking for. I would start with these considerations.

we purchased are converter box, hooked it up with our outside antenna.which we receive channel 6 very well.now with the box hooked up we get nothing.so this means we will not be able to get channel 6.or are we doing something wrong.new antenna and converter box i hope we didnt spend the money for nothing can you help me out here, thank you

How Do We Get Channel 6 Over Satellite TV?

Posted by Pat Clow, Aura, MI - Wednesday, January 07, 2009 at 12:55 p.m.

Watched your 6 O'clock news show last night over our Sansung Digital TV and got the message that we would no longer receive your signal. Our roof antenna has given great service, allowing reception from you, 13, 3, 5 as well as 2 and 4 from Thunder Bay. Now it appears we'll just have a monster on our roof for the birds to perch upon. We've contacted Congressman Stupak's office and it seems there may be a way to get Channel 6 over DirectTV and/or Dish Network. Could you provide information on how we can encourage this to happen? Along with several hundred other folks in our area our only access to Channel 6 is via antenna. No cable service available.

What do we do now

Posted by Norman Balko, About 10 miles south of Munising - Wednesday, January 07, 2009 at 12:39 p.m.

After reading the comments I feel like I'm just repeating what most of the others have said, but after buying two coverter boxes and trying both I still cannot get a digital signal. From the comments I am reluctant to purchase a new antenna or booster for fear that it won't do any good. I have a roof top antenna now and receive channels 3&6 well and 13 not quite as well but still viewable. No cable is available in our area. Don't know what to do next, but I know I'm not happy and it sounds like I'm not alone!

no signal - buy this - buy that - no one gets the picture

Posted by marcia williams, Manistique/Gulliver - Wednesday, January 07, 2009 at 10:30 a.m.

I sporadically had 5 channels when I first hooked up the converter box. That seemed good. Now I have ZERO when the box is on. I have heard that I may not get any stations at my location after February, BUT have been told to BUY a new more powerful antenna, buy a new booster for the antenna and at the TV to see if that works!!!??? I cannot afford all this 'crap', let alone that it is below freezing here and will be for some time!!! Why did they choose February for this change and WHY the change in the first place - I had one channel all the time and 2 some of the time on analog!!
BUY this, BUY that, no guarantee of reception or BUY cable (which is not available) or BUY a dish and subscribe to TV service!!! Who is going to PAY for that! This is a recession and lots of people are loosing their jobs, food costs more, energies cost more just to get by.

New TV, new antenna, still cannot get TV

Posted by Carol Lohr, Homestead WI - Tuesday, January 06, 2009 at 8:08 p.m.

We bought a new digital HDTV, and a new UHF antenna,(good for 100 mile distance) and everytime there is a test from TV6, it says our TV is not ready. I don't know what else to do. We have direct TV, but that should not affect our antenna reception right. We watch TV 6 for all our local news and weather and I hate to not get it come digital day. Please someone help.

dtv test this morning

Posted by nora viau, West of Esanaba - Tuesday, January 06, 2009 at 4:07 p.m.

I recently purchased by converter box, hooked it up to my tv with rabbit ears, ran the scan and only get channel 3. Channel 3 comes in so clear but we cannot get a dtv signal from channel 6. When I switch back to analog I can get 3, 6 and 13. Channel 3 is really clear but 6 and 13 are a bit fuzzy but still clear enough to watch. Repeated this scan several times but still only get channel 3. Can you help? Is there a brand of rabbit ears that I should be getting to pick up more channels. From all the lip service out in the viewing area about all the free channels, where are they since I only get channel 3. I understand that TV 6 broadcasts digital each tues during the news broadcasts. Hope this information is accurate. Thank you for any help.

My television was manufactured in May of 1998. A few moments ago TV6 turned off it's analog signal as a test and I received the message that my TV was ready for the digital signal. How can that be? The way I understood it was that any TV over three years old needed the converter box.

No signal from TV6

Posted by Kenneth Clement, Stonington Peninsula - Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at 9:28 p.m.

We have had a signal from TV6, mostly snowy, but watchable... We thought if we invested in the latest model TV it would be better. It was a little better, but that only lasted a short time. On or about the first week of December 2008, we lost the signal. Was there any changes at that time to cause the loss of the signal? Is this the "new way" things will be by going digital? We are not alone in this dilemma.

We wrote letters to the satelite companies to see if they would carry TV6. Their repy was "For your zip code you should not have a problem recieving TV6 and we will not be carring that signal"

Can you advise us in any way? We really like TV6 and miiss all the local UP news and info.

Posted by Donna Armistead, Jacobsville (across from Pequaming) - Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at 7:58 a.m.

My husband purchased an RCA converter box, serial #25FS E252239, and ran your test. With our rooftop antenna we receive only 3 stations reliably, but these have been sufficient for our TV viewing needs. We have depended on TV6 for local news coverage, the arts/events calendar and school closings, and now it appears we will be dumped too. Disappointing. We don't have cable service in our area, and I fear if we go to DirecTV or Dish Network, the local stations we enjoy (you and WMNU) will no longer be available. Please advise.

I am writting for my neighbor who had a tv that was more than 15 years old I told him he needed a new tv which I went out and got him and when you tested in Sept. the tv showed that he would not recieve the signal,(I wasnt there so dont know exactly what it showed) however I am now reading that I may have to tell him that he is going to have to buy a new antennia also. Is this true? I am sure his antennia as old as his old tv if not older. Why has the fact that we may need a different antennia not been made more clear? Here in the UP it will be quite a job to change this in Feb. I guess it is up to us to know what we need but when you stop and think that there are many elder people who this is effecting which is the case here, I never heard of the antennia until I went to your website and read it.
I like most people help out my elderly neighbors but I was already up to date with a HDTV and a HDTV antennia and never gave thougt to a newer antennia.
When will you be conducting your next test? I would like to be at his house when its conducted. Is there a place on you website that shows what days and times you are going to conduct these tests?
Thanks for you time.
I also think it would be time well spent if you answered the questions ask by us on your website underneath each question asked.
I seen that some of my concerns were already ask but I didnt see where you posted the answers.
If you have already answered this on your site I apolize but I did not see. Most sites have the question and directly under it the answer.

Have you any way of determining how many???

2. Are you doing anything, like compensation, to get DirectTV or Dish Network to carry your programming?

3. Do you have any plans to install additional repeaters in your broadcast area so that we will continue receiving your signals???

4. Do you suppose that maybe WJMN will allow you to install a repeater on top of their super high antenna

Still confused

Posted by Lisa Hosie, Crystal Falls - Thursday, November 13, 2008 at 6:58 p.m.

Wjil I get it

We have Chartier as our cable provider. Our T.V. is an older model that does not have a digital tuner. Will this signal convert to my T.V. anyway?

"Fringe Area Antenna and Signal Amplifier" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Thursday, November 06, 2008 at 6:08 p.m.

If your antenna is a VHF and UHF unit, it should work in the future. If the amplifier passes VHF/UHF/FM bands, it too will work fine. Your system will work best if the rotor/antenna is pointed directly at the broadcast tower for each station.

We live in the suburbs of McFarland. We have a tripod mounted fringe area antenna with a signal amplifier installed and a rotor system. We are buried in high trees however, we can get watchable signals on 3,6, 10 [sometimes] and 13. We do have to tweak the rotor some depending on what we are watching. Will this antenna receive the digital signal as it is configured now? Is the digital signal going to be affected by the amplifier or is it going to be invisible to it? If the digital signal is invisible to the amp? Will I get a stronger signal by removing the amp? Is it going to be necessary to tweak the rotor to accommodate the digital signals of the different available stations?

"On the radio" Response

Sorry....87.7 will go away when we turn off our analog transmitter next February.

I am able to receive TV6 transmittion on my radio at 87.7 - will I still be able to pick this up after you go digital?

"reception poor" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Thursday, November 06, 2008 at 5:58 p.m.

If you are receiving our analog signal poorly, you will most likely not be able to pick up our digital signal. An antenna mounted amplifier can work wonders in some cases though.

We currently have a rooftop antenna to view TV6 news and Directv dish to view other programming. Our reception is quite poor on the TV6 channel. Will we be able to get a clear picture after we install the converter box or do we need additional equipment also besides having the 75 foot tower we already have??

"Channel 7"

Is channel 7 eventually going to go digital also?

"converter box use" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Thursday, November 06, 2008 at 5:51 p.m.

Only if you will only be using the one channel that the converter is tuned into. Otherwise, it's one converter box per TV.

I have an uhf/vhf antenna, it is in the attic. I receive tv6 very well. Can I position the converter box in my attic between the antenna and the coax cable that goes to my tv sets? Thereby using one converter box for all tv sets "down signal" from the box?

"Do I need an amplifier now too?" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Thursday, November 06, 2008 at 5:47 p.m.

DTV signals are more difficult to lock into. Make sure your antenna is pointed at our antenna site SE of Republic. Depending on what else you're dealing with obstruction-wise, you may need to invest in an antenna mounted amplifier.

I live in Cornell where I currently receive channels 3 and 6 pretty well on my rooftop antenna. However, my tv did not pass your test. I bought the converter box and hooked it up. It does not find any channels. Am I going to need to purchase an amplifier now too? This is not only costly, but unfair that the government is requiring everyone to make the switch.

"Manual TV's" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Thursday, November 06, 2008 at 5:35 p.m.

Yes. You will set your TV on channel 4 and the converter box will then be your tuner, which comes with a remote.

Will the convertor boxes work with the OLD TV's that do not have a remote? That is the one's that are channel changed and turned off and on manually - not with a remote.

"Receiving a signal" response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Thursday, November 06, 2008 at 5:30 p.m.

You will need a converter box to pick up local DTV stations. You may be too far from us to pick up our digital and channel 3 is currently broadcasting their digital on channel 48 in Escanaba at low power. You may be one of the people left without local stations following this transition. We will continue however, to broadcast our analog channel 14 low power repeater out of Escanaba for years to come. You may be able to pick that station up now and moving forward.

We ive in Cooks, and have Direct TV and a outside antenna. I have to turn off the direct box to get the local stations channel 3 and sometimes channel 6. Do I need a converter box to pick up these stations after Feb? thank you for your time.

"Reception in Eben/Chtham" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Thursday, November 06, 2008 at 5:20 p.m.

I would think you would be able to get us unless you have something in the way. Perhaps try tuning in the antenna using our analog channel first. Then once adjusted, switch to the digital converter box. An Antenna mounted amplifier would certainly help indoor signal strength.

We have a large rooftop, directional antenna, but haven't been able to tune in any digital channels, not just yours. Checking the "signal meter" on the digital box while on channel 35 does show some activity, but not enough to tune in. It fluctuates between 0 and 15 (middle of bad). Just those two numbers, zero and 15, over and over. Should we be getting the signal out here? Is there something we can do to improve it/something to check? Would a preamp help?

"rabbit ears" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Thursday, November 06, 2008 at 4:52 p.m.

Not sure why your cable system will not be carrying us or frankly if they can stop carrying us. You will need to use a converter box if you are not using cable and will be using your analog TV. Without knowing exactly where you are and what you're dealing with obstruction-wise, I don't know for sure if you will be able to receive us with your current rabbit ears. You may need to upgrade your antenna, but I would try it first with the rabbit ears with the converter box. If it doesn't work, an outdoor UHF/VHF antenna pointed east would be best.

I live in amasa and have heard that we will not be able to receive tv 6 with our cable system. We do not have cable where we are located in amasa we have been using rabbit ears. With the converter box will we be able to receive tv6.

"DTV Reception" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Thursday, November 06, 2008 at 4:44 p.m.

We will be able to raise our power when we take delivery of and install our higher power transmitter. We have no specific date as to when that will be. We're hopeful of May but it may be later. Same for the increase of height.

We live 2 miles South of Tapiola and just had a new antennae and signal booster installed by the Antennae Store out of Calumet. We just barely receive your signal in our location. Picture comes and goes. It looks like we will get a good picture once you raise your tower and boost the signal. Do you know when you will be doing this yet? Until then, we will have no TV.

"No digital reception in Pelkie" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Thursday, November 06, 2008 at 4:36 p.m.

Any additional support by way of letters or emails to our Congressman and Senators would certainly be helpful in getting all of our local stations on the dish systems. Pre-written letters and email addresses are on our website. You are on the fringe of our coverage area at 46 miles to our NW beyond the Hurons I believe. I can't say for sure if our increases will help you in your location. Many factors come into play that could be interfering otherwise.

I have a VHF/UHF long range antenna with a high quality booster on it and can't get any signal from you on channel 35 (6.1 digital). I get a near excellent picture on analog channel 6 and channel 13. I think it's really bad that you were forced to go to channel 35 UHF as this is going to eliminate a lot of your viewers in the outlying areas. I don't think your increase in power or antenna height is going to help us out in these areas because the UHF signal doesn't carry as far because of the higher frequency that it's on. We get our distant networks, including NBC, on Dish Network but prefer to watch channel 6. I guess our only hope for the future is to keep writing to Congressman Bart Stupak and our other representatives to try and get our local stations on satellite.

"channel 6.1" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Thursday, November 06, 2008 at 4:26 p.m.

Our DTV signal will show up on a DTV or converter box as either 6-1 or 6.1. We will be raising our power about mid-2009. We're also trying to increase our antenna height as well. If you were receiving it and then not, you may on the edge of the DTV cliff-affect. You get all(perfect) or nothing. You may just need to adjust your antenna slightly or add an antenna mounted amplifier to move off of that cliff.

Is TV6 broadcasting digital on channel 6.1? I was at a campground to visit a friend and he said the channel on 6.1 is digital. He was receiving it clear as a bell in Munising. I was able to get it at home but then it disappeared. Is this a lower power than when you go full digital? Thank you

"My TV" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Thursday, November 06, 2008 at 4:09 p.m.

If your TV says HDTV or ATSC on it, you should be fine. Even if you have an HDTV though, you need to make sure it is tuning into the DTV signals, not just the analog signals. Our signal/channel will come up as 6-1 on your screen if it's our digital signal, not just 6. If you have an analog TV that is not fed by a cable company, you will need a converter box and possibly an antenna capable of picking up UHF and VHF signals. Converter boxes are usually available at any store that sells TV's. They're also available on-line, but please try to spend your locally earned dollars locally first.

HOW DO I KNOW OR FIND OUT IF MY TV IS THE TYPE OF TV THAT IS OK FOR THIS CHANGE OVER? MY TV IS A JVC D-SERIES. I SAW THE TESTS DONE ON TV AND I COULD SEE EVERYTHING. AND I WOULD THINK THAT MY TV IS ABOUT 8 YEARS OLD. IS IT AS SIMPLE AS PICKING UP A BOX AND WHARE DO YOU GET IT FROM? THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP.

"Waiver Requests" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Thursday, November 06, 2008 at 4:00 p.m.

Based on a viewers location within our signal, we base our decision to grant or deny waivers on whether a viewer can pick us up on an antenna or not, as the rules governing this process state. When the dish companies carry the local stations on their systems there will be no need for waivers at all.

Thanks for the answer, but why won't TV6 grant a waiver so Satellite Subscribers can watch NBC programming? There must be a reason?

Waivers are granted based on if a viewer can pick up the local affiliate with a properly installed and pointed rooftop antenna. The mandated rules don't consider a viewer not wanting an antenna as a viable reason for granting a waiver. We don't beleive its an issue of the dish companies not ever carrying the locals, they just don't carry them yet.

If DirecTV will not carry the TV6 signal, why won't TV6 grant waivers so customers of DirecTV can receive NBC programming? Some locations do not receive good signal (analog or digital) and some people do not wish to have a large antenna on their property.

Can we get an answer from Rep. Stupak?

Posted by Jane Ahola, near Amasa - Friday, October 24, 2008 at 10:05 a.m.

I heard that Rep. Stupak had introduced a bill requiring directv to carry Ch. 6 after the conversion. I have e-mailed his office and called his local rep. and have been unable to get an answer. I recently bought a new TV, have a rooftop antenna, directv and get Ch. 6 clear currently. However, when I tune to Ch. 35 which is your current digital channel, I get no signal. Now, I am being told that I need a antenna that picks up the digital signal. I do not want to go through that expense if directv is going to be carrying Ch. 6. And suppose I get a digital antenna and still can't get the signal. Will I then be told that my antenna isn't high enough?

OK...we need help. We signed up for the coupons and couldn't find a converter box anywhere...now the coupons are expired. So then we decided to buy a newer TV thinking that would solve the problem. Brought it home hooked it up to the satellite (Dish Network) receiver and the rabbit ears that we previously watched channel 6 on and couldn't get it to come in no matter what we tried. We had heard that DirecTV offered all the local channels, so we thought GREAT at least we can get NBC programming through them, so we switched satellite providers. Now we find out that we need to get a waiver and pay extra (No, it's not in the package as their advertising and sales rep promised us!) for the east/west coast feeds of the local channels. But it'll take up to 45 days to get them AND they can't guarantee which, if any, of the channels we'll actually be able to get. We're writing to Rep. Stupak, but what else can we do to get NBC programming??? PLEASE don't tell us to invest in an outdoor antenna unless you can guarantee us that we will be able to receive your signal. (Which from what I've read is a pretty "iffy" proposition.)

You can ask DirecTV to add all of your local stations to your programming package. Within the Entertainment section of our website is a link regarding what people can do to help get local stations on their dishes. If you're refering to the converter box, they're very easy to install and go inside the house. A converter is required for each analog TV and can be acquired at many area stores. We have a link on this page showing what local vendors are available. Signal reception depends on many things, but we are increasing our power and hopefully height next year.

We watch Direct TV all the time, except for TV 6 news & weather & sports. What do we tell Direct TV that we want them to broadcast the T V 6 signal to us from their satellite. I'm not sure I have the skill to mount a box in addition to our dishs connection to the tv in our house. For our second TV, will we need even another box?
Where can we get them?
Why get a coupon if they expire?
Why don't you answer the questions after they are asked instead of having to scroll all over the place to find your answer to a question?
It sure seems like there is going to be a big problem getting your UHF signal in Rapid River.

Though it is true that others have negotiated fees (pennies) per subscriber for providing programming to Dish companies, like every other programming provider in the world, TV6 has demanded nothing except that the Dish companies properly serve the public by allowing local U.P. stations on their systems like they've done for the rest of the country. We've heard many "Reasons" why local into local isn't offered here, but rest assured, we've been for it and trying to get them to do it for many many years.

I understand that tv6 has demanded a fee per directv customer in the tv6 viewing area, is this correct and is this not the reason that directv will not broadcast your signal? I will not buy a box to get your signal but when my present analog tv wears out, I will buy a digital set. I don't watch NBC programing any way. I do watch the local news sometimes but tune it off when news is about Founders Landing or the Marquette City commission.

On our DTV page is a link where you can enter your location information and it will calculate what you will be able to receive, what kind of antenna you should have, and what direction you'll need to point it toward to receive your local stations.

There actually will not be any "switch" over to Digital.....We've been broadcasting a DTV/HDTV signal since 2004....we will be turning off our analog signal, leaving only the DTV signal. You are currently able to choose analog or digital reception for your set. You will need a UHF or VHF/UHF antenna to receive our digital signal (Channel 35).

Testing our reception

Posted by Kathy Juetten, Pelkie - Friday, August 01, 2008 at 3:36 p.m.

Though we have a digital tv, we failed your first test. It appears that we are out of the smaller range of your digital signal, but we also had our tv tuned to 6 (not 6.1 or 35). We do not have a uhf antena, but if we are out of your range, should we bother buying one? Should e tune our set differently when you run your next test in September?

Thanks for your help, the excellant series on this conversion, and your continued testing!

Broadcast range

I understand the broadcast range with digital will not be as great as with analog. We have a camp in the 3 Lakes area and wonder if it will be included in your new broadcast area.

"Digital Test?" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Monday, July 21, 2008 at 1:06 p.m.

We will be conducting additional Analog signal interruption tests to help people know if they are affected by next February's analog shut down. Our next test will be September 4th, not sure of the time as yet. The key is if you or your cable company receives us via antenna, changes are necessary either by the viewer or by the viewers’ cable company. We're also contacting cable company's directly to inquire as to their plan for the transition, and to offer help if necessary. We aren't thrilled with the time of season either. This is another reason why we're pushing this now.....we don't want people out changing their antenna in February. We're also in the process of putting together an antenna sales and installer list to post on our website.

Digital Test?

Posted by S Mashak, Iron Mountain - Monday, July 21, 2008 at 7:58 a.m.

Is it possible that you will be running another test this sunmmer. It would be nice if we had a little more time to check our systems. Even if it was scheduled for early morning or late evening. 1am -4am.I can't believe this is going to take place in the middle of February when we have 4' of snow to deal with.

"Digital Foot Print" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 4:58 p.m.

Kind of difficult to describe our footprint. Compared to our analog signal map, it's a little smaller. In and around Escanaba our analog repeater on channel 14 on the Harbor Tower will remain operational for several years yet. Depending on your location, height, terrain....you may be able to receive our digital signal. Check our "Digital Deadline" page and click in the "specific location" link to get additional help and information on what you'll need to pick up any U.P. TV signal.

"Converer" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 4:46 p.m.

We have been broadcasting our digital signal for over 4 years now. Next year we will be increasing our output power and filing with the FCC to increase our height by 175 feet. Not sure of the exact dates yet, but it will be after the February analog shut-off. You should be able to pick us up fine right now so there may be a problem with your set-up or programming of your system. You can tell Glenda at Radio Shack that I said so. :o)

"Digital Ready TV" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 4:36 p.m.

It depends on how "Digital Ready" is used or meant. Some "digital ready" TV's are actually only digital monitors, "ready" for a digital signal from a tuner. If this is what you have, then you will need a converter box. If you have a Digital TV that has a tuner in it like most sold today, then you should be all set other than you may need to change to a UHF antenna, possibly with an antenna-mounted amplifier where you are located. Our DTV channel is 35.

"Digital and HDTV" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 4:27 p.m.

Thank you for the positive report on your reception of our Digital and HD signal. Yes the signal you receive from us is in fact better than what is received from HD Dish and HD cable. They currently cannot provide their customers with the same banwidth/resolution as over the air Broadcasts can. Both Dish and Cable HD are a marked improvement over analog though. Hopefully the Dish company's will allow our local stations on their dishes soon in the U.P. for those unable to pick us up over the air. Again, thanks for the positive input.

Very few battery powered TV's are currently being manufactured, but they are and are slowly coming into the marketplace. Another option is to use your current TV fed by a converter box that's powered by an inverter or generator. Not the greatest option, but an option nonetheless. An outdoor UHF or Digital antenna would be best in any case.

"Will tuner work?" Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 4:10 p.m.

The tuner within that TV will work if it receives enough signal. An outdoor UHF antenna would be best, for distant viewers an antenna mounted amplifier may be necessary as well.

"Mrs." Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC TV6 - Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at 4:06 p.m.

You do not need to purchase a converter box and depending on if your current antenna is VHF/UHF or not will determine if you need to buy a new one. Our Digital signal is UHF Channel 35 so a UHF antenna will be needed. For a better idea of what you will need, go to our "Digital Deadline" page and use the "Places to find TV6" section and click on the link for your "Specific location". Input some information, un-click the junk mail options, and it will figure out what you will need for any stations within your range.

"outside antennea" Response

Your reception depends on many factors. Distance, Height, obstructions, etc. You are a long way out, but reception may be possible. I suggest you click on the link on our "Digital Deadline" page under where to find TV6..."Specific location". It will help you find out what will be necessary to receive all U.P. stations.

Your chances of receiving us via digital after our improvements are pretty good. In your location you may also be able to pick up our analog repeater operating from the Harbor Tower building on channel 14 in Escanaba. This and our repeater out of Marquette on channel 7 will continue to operate in analog for at least three additional years.

We have a large UHF/VHF antenna and receive ch. 6 pretty well. I so far haven't been able to get your digital broadcast with the converter in the line. It's the analog pass - through type but when I turn on the converter I lose your picture. The dealer, (Radio Shack), says to wait until February to try it ??? This doesn't seem logical to me - I think I need more info - hopefully from you. They say other people have told them the same.

I have a VHF/UHF antenna on top of my house approximatley 45 ft high. I also have a booster on the antenna. I currently receive not only the digital broadcast but also High Definition when it is available on the National NBC broadcast. Other than some occasional picsellation which I assume will get better once TV6 goes to a full power digital broadcast, I think the HD signal is as good or better than what I recieve on sattelite. I bought my antenna and booster at Radio Shack for about $150. Hope this helps.

You will not need a converter box if your TV is capable of receiving digital signals. You may need to get either a digital indoor antenna or a UHF/VHF outdoor (recommended) antenna though.

I recommend that you go to our Digital Deadline webpage and click on the section that says "Where to point your antenna to find the best signal for your specific location." That will help you figure out what you will be able to receive and/or what you will need to receive us and everyone else. Not sure if your current antenna is UHF or not...it needs to be.
Yes we are raising our power by 20,000 watts and filing to raise our broadcast antenna another 175 feet.

Will the UHF digital signal be strong enough at Grand Marais for reception on a UHF antenna? I don't want to invest in a new antenna that will not work. At present we rely on your station for weather warnings, news, and entertainment. You are the only station broadcasting from the Upper Peninsula that we can receive on the VHF analog signal.

TV6 Reception

Posted by Rick Schwartz, Garden Corners, MI - Wednesday, July 09, 2008 at 5:50 p.m.

Hi:
My antenna is almost 60' above ground and above most trees. I also have a "booster" on it. Usually I get the analog signal very poorly. Once in a great while I can get your digital signal late at night with slight pixelation. After the the elimination of analog and you increase your digital power and possibly raise your tower, what are my chances of receiving your signal? I'm sure you can't predict it perfectly, I just want to know if I have a chance or not.

Thank you.

What about radio signal?

Posted by Brian Rice, Gwinn - Tuesday, July 08, 2008 at 10:44 p.m.

Will I still be able to pick up TV6's audio on my FM radio? With many radio stations in the UP broadcasting a digital signal, I would think you should be able to. The question is, will you do so? There are many of us who like to listen to TV6 when in the car on the way to work or on the radio at camp. Please try to continue this service! Let us know if it won't so we aren't taken by surprise when it goes off the air, or let us know that it will continue so we can rest easy.

Response

Posted by Sonny Reschka, WLUC - Tuesday, July 08, 2008 at 9:52 p.m.

No we are not to full capacity yet. We will be increasing our power another 20,000 watts and are planning to file to increase our antenna height by another 175 feet. To my knowledge Rabbit ears and DTV don't play well together. There are Digital ready indoor antennas, but with digitals all or nothing tendencies, I'd opt for an outdoor antenna capable of picking up UHF. (TV6 Digital is broadcast on UHF channel 35.)
As far as the analog goes, we're at full power. ?!?
I don't know of an exact web address for comments and/or questions for an appropriate governing agency, but I will try to find one for everyone to use and will post it here when I do.

Enhanced signal strength

Posted by Fred Lapinski, 17 miles south of Esky on M 35 - Tuesday, July 08, 2008 at 9:17 p.m.

Since maybe a pure digital outdoor antennae or an upgraded combo antennae would do wonders for station reception for those, like you, who will be experiencing a reduction in signal strength, why doesn't TV 6 put out a list of those anywhere in the UP or Wisconsin who install outdoor antennaes? It would be the single most consumer oriented service you could provide.

At my camp in Kiva, I use a circular disk antenna on the roof with a power boost and get an excellent picture on chanels 3,6 and 13 most of the time, but in certain weather, only 6 fall off some in quality. What are the odds on my getting a digital signal at camp. Also, at any time in the future, do you plan on improving your coverage area.

Digital Broadcasting

Posted by Rae Ann Biehl, Niagara, WI - Tuesday, July 08, 2008 at 1:56 p.m.

Is TV6 broadcasting digitally to full capacity on channel 35? The reason I am asking is because I connected my converter box up to a TV with rabbit ears (less than a year old) and cannot receive the digital signal. I can receive analog signal with the rabbit ears fine. It is not the best picture (about 6-7 on scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being excellent) but it will do. Also, in the past three to four months, the analog picture quality from TV6 has progressively gotten worse - why?

Also, is there a website where we can voice complaints/concerns/comments/questions to the government regarding this transition? It seems that every place I talk to about this transition doesn't know much of anything making it extremely difficult to get questions answered.

Thank you for your help and response.
