DELTA COUNTY -- A downstate man is walking his way through the state for a good cause, but not with his feet close to the ground...he's on three-foot stilts.

Neil Sauter started his journey about seven weeks ago in Toledo, Ohio and has traveled over 600 miles so far.  He's walking to raise money for United Cerebral Palsy of Michigan.

So far, he's raised over $15,000 through sponsorships and donations along the way.  In addition, he'll get a federal grant which promises a three to one match.

"I just actually started walking on stilts last summer, and part of the reason that I wanted to make this trip was because I got a scholarship that was related to having cerebral palsy.  When I took that, I thought I wanted to do something to give back when I could.  This is sort of my way of giving back the generosity that was shown to me," said stilt walker Neil Sauter.

He hopes to end his journey in Ironwood by June 28.

Posted by Julie Freeman, ENGADINE - Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at 9:46 p.m.

We are so proud of this young man's walk for Cerebal Palsy! Neil was appx. two miles East of Naubinway, heading West on U.S.2, June 10, at 5:45 p.m., at that time it was raining with some thunder and lighting in Engadine. (Engadine is appx. 7 miles West of Naubinway). Our prayers are with him on his journey and we hope he raises more then his goal for the United Cerebral Palsy of Michigan. Neil has emailed me a couple of times and we have followed his walk on his web page: http://www.stiltstory.org/home

I saw this guy walking down Washington St in Marquette today. I did a double take. I had no idea he was raising money for such a good cause. I would have donated. Keep up the good work and happy trails!!

We had the pleasure of meeting this man downstate at a local store sitting on an ice machine taking a break.
He is a very pleasurable person to talk to and is doing a wonderful thing. We are happy to see he is finally getting closer to the end of this journey.

Wonderful..
