State park plans spring events

PARADISE -- Tahquamenon Falls State Park has announced its schedule of spring nature programs. Tahquamenon Falls State Park is located near Paradise in the Upper Peninsula's Chippewa County.
On Saturday, April 26, a program called "Birds & Binoculars" will be held starting at 9 a.m. at the Rivermouth Campground entrance, located five miles south of Paradise. Participants should bring binoculars, and the park will have a limited supply available to borrow. Participants also should dress for the weather, including wind and rain. The hike will focus on birdwatching and identification and will last about 90 minutes.
On Saturday, May 24, there will be a spring roadside clean-up project along Michigan Highway 123 between the Upper and Lower Falls. Supplies and a lunch will be provided to volunteers who come out to help pick up winter garbage along this stretch of highway. The project will begin at 10 a.m.
On Saturday, June 7, there will be a "Hike Between Da Falls" from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the park. Participants should bring hiking boots for the five-mile hike on the most popular trail in the park, the River Trail. The Hiawatha Shore-to-Shore Chapter of the North Country Trail will be on hand to answer questions and provide nature activities. A free shuttle will transport participants from the Lower Falls to the trailhead at the Upper Falls.
All events are free; however, a valid 2008 state park motor vehicle permit is required to enter the park. Permits can be purchased at the park entrance for $6 for a daily and $24 for an annual for Michigan residents. For out-of-state residents, permits are available for $8 for a daily and $29 for an annual.
