WAKEFIELD -- A Wakefield man remains hospitalized following an explosion and fire at his home early Wednesday evening.

Forty-two-year old Robert Smith was remarkably coherent, officials said, after surviving the explosion.

"He stated that he walked into the residence and a few seconds later, he lit a cigarette, and that's when the residence blew up," said Gogebic County Deputy Ross Solberg.

Officials believe the explosion may have been caused by natural gas.

The State Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate.
