MARQUETTE -- A panel of U.P. airport managers came together Thursday morning at an Upper Peninsula Economic Development Alliance meeting in Marquette.

They discussed some of the problems local airports face.  A recent study shows the growth of our economy depends on the success of our local airports.

One of their main problems is passengers heading to other airports because of high air fares and a limited number of flights.  Another issue they face is the uncertainty of the Essential Air Service Program which helps smaller airports maintain commercial airline service.

"Direct communication with airlines is a start, and marketing efforts at the local level to increase our passenger volume is really critical as well," said Fred Kotler, Airport Project Analyst.

Members say the discussion was a step forward in getting all airports and the community working together to increase the airports' success.

Airport managers will create a comprehensive plan on ways to increase passenger loads.
