ALGER COUNTY -- The Alger County Chamber of Commerce encouraged local shopping this season and they had huge success. The Rekindle the Spirit Grand Giveaway encouraged more than $300,000 worth of local commerce in Alger county.

Shoppers saved their receipts from purchases in Alger county and for every $50 they spent they were entered in a drawing for some holiday prizes. A 42 inch TV, a 32 inch TV and a Kindle Fire were all up for grabs.

"The community supports the local shops, local shop owners, I think people realize too that it can save on gas money they can help their community out they can make it so if they shop local there can be more, whether its retail or other types of business, that will be close by," said Kathy Reynolds of the Alger County Chamber of Commerce.

This was the second year for the event and the Chamber of Commerce saw a large jump in participation this year. With the success they plan to continue to encourage local holiday shopping next year.
