ESCANABA -- There's a statewide program to help people who've fallen on temporary hard times, and most counties in the Upper Peninsula are offering this program.
The program is called the Michigan Hardest Hit Funds. Delta County is partnering with the Michigan Homeowner Assistance Nonprofit Housing Corporation to help property taxpayers. The county treasurer says the four offered programs are available to anyone who is having their mortgage foreclosed or are behind on property taxes.
"If you're getting into the third year of your non-payment of taxes, the county will foreclose," said Delta County Treasurer Tom Sabor. "That's why I think the State of Michigan recognizes that some people have had some difficult times in the state in the past few years, and they want to help those people get over that hump."
As long as the individual remains the primary resident, the loan will be forgiven 20 percent each year until it's done.
