MARQUETTE -- Local retailers across the country and here in the UP continued offering discounts after Black Friday.

The 2012 holiday shopping season continued Saturday with "Small Business Saturday," a nationwide effort to get customers away from the big box stores and into local shops.

The concept was first conceived and promoted by American Express back in 2010.

"Shopping local really helps the community," said Ray Kuczwara, president of Washington Shoe Store. "We are the driving force, the backbone of Marquette. When you shop local, your money stays local and it gets re-spent local."

American Express estimates over a 100 million shoppers took part in Small Business Saturday last year.

Next up in the holiday shopping season is Cyber Monday where millions of Americans will take to the internet to find the best deals.
