February 8, 1996: Big Turn-around

February 1996 started with record cold.  The first two days were genuine below zero days.  In fact, the high on the 2nd only reached 13 below.  The low temperature reported by the National Weather Service (NWS) near Negaunee hit 31 below on both February 4-5.  Many observers across Upper Michigan hit around 35 below during this stretch.   The cold wave, however, broke quickly.  Already on February 7, the temperature soared above 40 degrees as mild Pacific air flooded the central U.S.  On this date 17 years ago, the high reached 36 and it went above freezing the next two days.

The first week of February 2013 came in 11 degrees below average.  Things will turn around rather dramatically after a cold night tonight.  A south component to the wind will set in on Saturday and continue Sunday.  By Sunday, many places in the U.P. will flirt with the freezing mark and may actually pop above it in a number of locations.  That means the next system coming out of Colorado late in the weekend may contain some mixed precipitation over parts of the U.P.
