Whiteout conditions cause massive crash on US-2

NAUBINWAY -- Officials are reporting a bad accident on US-2 east of Naubinway involving three semi tractor trailers and an unknown number of passenger vehicles.

US-2 has finally reopened after the crash that happened around noon on Wednesday.

US-2 was shut down and a detour was put in place around the area. Motorists travelling near the Hog Island area east of Naubinway were detoured around the stretch of US-2 between M-117 and Worth Road.

According to officials there were no injuries caused during the crash. The Mackinac County Sheriff's Department reported that a west bound semi truck lost control and jack-knifed, blocking US-2. A vehicle that was following the truck was able to stop and pull to the side of the road, but that vehicle was struck by a second semi that lost control and jack-knifed as well.

After deputies had arrived at the scene a third semi stopped for the crash, but was struck by a truck, which spilled a load of around 20 huge rolls of paper, according to police.

The crash happened during whiteout conditions with slippery, snow covered roads. There were four semi trucks involved and one passenger vehicle. There were no injuries, and police are still investigating the crash.
