DETROIT - Ishpeming’s Eric Kostreva ran for 182 yards and three touchdowns, as the Hematites defeated Detroit Loyola 20-14 in the Division 7 state championship on Saturday at Ford Field. Quarterback Alex Briones added 54 yards on 20 carries, while completing 2 of 4 passes for 29 yards.
The Hematites title is the school’s first since 1979, and caps a 13-1 season.
Loyola’s Keymonn’e Gabriel rushed for 129 yards and score on 21 carries, and the senior running back also caught four passes for 52 yards and a touchdown.
Loyola’s front four outweighed Ishpeming’s offensive line by an average of 36 pounds, but the Hematites controlled the line of scrimmage for much of the first half.
Ishpeming held Loyola to 3-and-outs on its first two possession, and took its first drive 71 yards in four plays, capped by Kostreva’s 55-yard touchdown run.
Loyola responded with touchdowns from Gabriel on a 28-yard, fourth-down reception, and a 20-yard third-quarter run gave the Bulldogs a 14-12 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Kostreva scored his third touchdown on a 3-yard run with 10:36 left in the game, and the Hematites stopped Loyola's two fourth-quarter drives to hang on for the win.
