ISHPEMING -- Northern Meats in Ishpeming is celebrating the start of hunting season by giving back to those who need it the most.

They're participating in the Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger Program, an organization that donates thousands of pounds of venison each year to needy families in Michigan.

Northern Meats is accepting deer donations, and they'll process it all, in addition to giving it to the Salvation Army. So far, they've had one man donate a whole 8-point buck from last year's hunting season.

"Thanksgiving, you know, hunting season, coming into Christmas, the giving time of the year. It's always nice to know that you're doing something for people that are in need of it. Giving it to the Salvation Army, it's just a great cause," said store owner Glenn Andrews.

Last year, the Sportsmen Against Hunger distributed 30,000 pounds of venison throughout the state.
