Members of the local Keweenaw Band of Chippewa Indians visited Teaching Family Homes on Tuesday morning

SANDS TWP. -- Students at Teaching Family Homes spent Tuesday morning learning about the Native American presence in our area.

Members of the local Keweenaw Band of Chippewa Indians visited the school in full regalia. They presented information on drumming customs and taught the students some words from the Ojibwa language.

Teacher Sandy Bannan said the entire Teaching Family Homes' campus has been learning about Native Americans throughout November because it is Native American Heritage Month.

"On campus here, we also have a serenity circle that we have developed with the help of the local tribal members as a recognition of the large part that Native Americans have played in our area," said Bannan.

Located in Sands Township, Teaching Family Homes is a child and family organization that cares for troubled children and families.
