MUNISING -- The case of alleged assault of an Alger County inmate by a sheriff's deputy is moving forward.

According to the Delta County Prosecutor's Office, 42-year-old William Joseph Carlson is facing a misdemeanor charge of assault and battery. The Delta County Prosecutor, Steve Parks, is handling the case due to conflicts of interest with Alger County officials.

Carlson is accused of assaulting an inmate, 55-year-old George Young.

Young was in jail, charged with criminal sexual conduct against a half dozen victims, when the alleged attack happened. Young is a chiropractor in Munising. Carlson is back in court April 12 for a hearing. George Young has a hearing set for April 1, both in Alger County Court.
