CALUMET -- The Michigan State Police have issued a warning concerning a new scam featuring a person posing as a United States Department of Health and Human Services representative.

Police say that a caller described himself as a worker with the USDHHS and offered a large amount of money as a grant to the victim. The person on the phone said that the grant was for filing taxes in a timely fashion and having a good credit rating.

The person posing as a USDHHS representative asked for a one-time donation to UNICEF through a money gram. The person posing as a USDHHS employee may have information about the victim, including addresses, social security number and the identity of family members.

The Michigan State Police are warning residents to never provide personal information or make donations over the phone unless they know and trust the person they are speaking with.
