MARQUETTE -- The Women's Center in Marquette received a big donation Wednesday from the Dead River Derby.

Kristine Granger from the roller derby team presented a check for $1,000 to the center.  The money was raised from sales of pinup calendars the team created.

The team says this donation is in line with their mission.

"The premise behind derby is to empower women and it's our goal to make sure that we spread that through our community and support our community and the women's center is the best place to start," said Dead River Derby Team  member Kristine Granger.

The Dead River Derby recently had their first match downstate.  They're planning home matches at Lakeview Arena in the summer.

The derby is also planning an informational event in April.
