HOUGHTON -- The Chassell man charged with operating a meth lab appeared in Houghton County Circuit Court on Thursday for sentencing.

Michael Paul Newberry is charged with operating and maintaining a meth lab as well as possession of methamphetamine and ecstasy.

The 26 year old was sentenced to 180 days in jail with credit for 135 days already served as well as three years of probation. Newberry's attorney, Pam Dobbs, said he has been attending Mission Bible Treatment Center in Gaastra.

"As the court is aware, people sometimes say they're going to go to a program, they get out of jail and they don't ever go, or they go for a couple of months and they walk away," said Dobbs. "He has not walked away from the program. He came straight back when he was released from the program to come back here for his plea, knowing what he was facing."

Newberry has been instructed to return to the treatment center after his jail sentence is served.
