IRON MOUNTAIN -- There's a community push for promoting early literacy in Iron Mountain, and on Monday, a group of collaborators from the Great Start Early Literacy Council met to discuss initiatives.
The Early Literacy Initiative has been a long time coming in Dickinson County, and leaders met to approve the program and establish goals. The council has set a goal of putting 5,000 books in the hands of children in Dickinson and Iron counties as a part of the initiative.
"We're hoping to do some fundraisers throughout the summer to, again, get those books into children's hands from 0 to 5," said Chamber Director Lynda Zanon. "It's so very important to be able to develop these children because they are our future."
As a community effort and investment, many individuals are a part of the council and seek to collaborate to accomplish what they call "raising a reader."
