The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is asking anglers to remove their ice shanties. Lake St. Clair (near Detroit) ice shanties must be removed by sunset Sunday, February 24.
On the Michigan-Wisconsin boundary waters, ice shanties must be removed from the ice by midnight on Friday, March 1. All other shanties on Upper Peninsula lakes must be removed by midnight on Sunday, March 31. After the mandatory removal dates, ice shanties may be used but must be removed daily.
If a shanty falls through the ice, owners could face a combination of 30 days in jail or fines of $100 to $500. If a shanty is removed by a government agency, the court can require the owner to reimburse the agency for an amount of up to three times the cost of removal.
According to the US Coast Guard, ice breaking operations will take place from Febrary 23-25 in Northen Green Bay up into Little Bay De Noc. The area of operations will be from Rock Island Passage north to Escanaba iron ore docks.
All ice fishermen should remove their ice shacks and equipment from these areas.
