MCMILLAN TWP. -- Any race depends on a group of dedicated volunteers to make sure everything goes according to plan. The Tahquamenon Country Sled Dog Race had 30 volunteers lending a hand this year.

John Brown, the volunteer co-coordinator, said that is their best volunteer turnout ever.

The extra help is needed with assisting the sled dog teams to the shoot and controlling the dogs' excitement. They were also out on trails assisting in safe crossings.

"It's been kind of difficult for some of the returning volunteers as they haven't been able to go to the same spots that they had been at in the past with the destruction of the fire," said Brown. "We've had to adjust things a little, but it's been a good turnout for volunteers."

Brown is looking forward to returning next year to the Muskallonge Lake State Park with an even bigger group of volunteers.
