MARQUETTE -- As people in Marquette prepare for the ball drop on New Year's Eve, the Marquette City Police are reminding motorists and pedestrians to be safe and respectful. Streets downtown will be closed from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. Washington Street from Third Street to Lakeshore Boulevard will be closed along with Front Street from Main Street to Bluff Street.
With a rash of pedestrian/vehicle accidents in the past few months, police are hoping everybody can have fun downtown in a peaceful manner. Alcohol is not permitted at the event, and additional officers will be on patrol downtown.
"Officers will obviously be down there keeping an eye on things, making sure that everybody, including the families and the young children and the people that want to go down there, are going to have a safe environment to do so," said Captain Blake Reiboldt of the Marquette City Police. "We're encouraging people to enjoy the downtown area but to do so respectfully."
The ball drop is put on by the Marquette Downtown Development Authority.
