IRON MOUNTAIN -- While services and presentations were held across the country to honor veterans Thursday, one local group did so in a more unique way.

The Mich-A-Con amateur radio club in Iron Mountain is broadcasting from the U.P. Veterans Memorial at Pine Mountain this week.

The group uses ham radios to contact other ham radios across the world to spread the word about the U.P. Veterans Memorial and honor veterans.  So far they've spoken to people throughout the country and from as far away as Iceland and Japan.

"Fellows that we talk to, many of them will say, well I served in Vietnam or I was in the Gulf War or I was in Iraq, World War II," said Tom Martin of the Mich-A-Con Radio Club.  "They appreciate the effort we're doing.  We get a lot of nice comments from across the country about what we're doing today."

The group began broadcasting Wednesday and will continue through Friday.
