Doctors say a mattress and sleeping position is important

ESCANABA -- It's important to get a good night's rest. One of the most important factors to making that possible is getting the right mattress.

It'll improve your overall health and well-being. Sleeping on an unsupportive mattress can become a problem.

Chiropractor, Dr. Melissa Vandermissen, says spinal misalignments result from improper sleeping positions. She says Tempur-Pedic and Sleep Number Beds tend to offer the best support.

“What I like to recommend for patients is dependent on their needs,” says Dr. Vandermissen. “Someone with low back pain or spine pain, I like to recommend more of a supportive or firm mattress."

A cheaper alternative is to buy a memory foam topper that conforms and gives you more spinal support.

But if you're looking for a new mattress, the technology is ever-changing.

Cool gel is memory foam that's infused with gel. It’s the latest mattress technology, and it's only been around for less than a year.

For some, price isn't the priority.

“One of the top ten reasons people would buy a mattress or not buy a mattress is price,” says Don Balsavich, President of Clare Bedding. “But it's always like sixth, seventh, eight, or the ninth lowest reason. Comfort is usually number one."

Experts say comfort, and a good pillow. A good pillow is one that supports the cervical spine properly in a forward c-shape. But before you hit the pillow, there's one more thing to keep in mind.

“Definitely sleeping on the back is best. Sleeping on your side is second best. Sleeping on one side all the time, your body's going to get used to that and have all the negative effects," explains Dr. Vandermissen.

Now that you've selected the perfect mattress, all you may need to do is find enough time to enjoy it.
