MARQUETTE -- Every year six thousand kids in the United States are born with Down Syndrome.

Thursday people with Down Syndrome along with their family and friends celebrated World Down Syndrome Day.

The date 3-21 is symbolic of the third copy of the 21st chromosome that causes Down Syndrome.

The global event aims to bring awareness and support to those diagnosed.

"This day means a lot to me to recognize Down Syndrome and awareness they're just the best loving children you could ever have.  They just fill your heart with joy.  They're sent from God," said Jennifer VanBuren who has child with Down Syndrome.

The event also helps families that have children or adults with Down Syndrome connect with each other.
