ESCANABA -- The Escanaba Veterinary Clinic is now using a new pet therapy laser.  The $28,000 unit helps speed up the healing process.

The first patient at the clinic, Beebie, has chronic arthritis.  Dr. Marlene Mackie says the laser is primarily used for relief of pain and swelling.  The laser will also be used on dental procedures for pets as well as during spaying and neutering to promote healing.  The treatment doesn't hurt at all.

"I think you'll see, like in Beebie's case, they sink into this and it feels good.  It produces a bit of a thermal heat reaction secondary to the light being produced," said Mackie.

The laser beam treatments only take a few minutes, and the results are immediate.
