HANCOCK -- The Portage Health Hospital in Hancock held its annual Lights of Love ceremony Wednesday night.

Members of the community are encouraged to donate money to have a light on the tree serve as a memorial for a loved one.  The money collected from those donations is put into a scholarship fund for students who wish to go into the field of healthcare.

This year the hospital raised over $3,000 and was able to provide scholarships for five students in the Copper Country.

"We've been doing this for a number of years, over 20 years, and we have been giving out scholarships all during that time.  We wanted to continue with that, so we've given out more than 40 scholarships already though the years," said Barb Worrall, President of the Portage Health Auxiliary.

During the ceremony, over 300 names of loved ones were read aloud followed by a short performance by Hancock band students.

The Gilded Rose Gift Shop in the hospital also made a donation of $40,000 to the hospital that will be used to improve the services and equipment the hospital provides.
