NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP -- Thursday was "World No Tobacco Day" and the Marquette County Health Department is getting the word out about resources available for smokers.

The day is an annual call of awareness for people to take notice of the global effects that tobacco has on people and communities.

The World Health Organization began this initiative in 1987.

Sarah Derwin, a health educator from the Marquette County Health Department, said the toll of tobacco is still high in the U.P., especially Marquette County.

Most smokers want to quit, according to Derwin.

"There is lots of help available, and I'd also tell them that the most effective folks that have quit combine some type of medication along with some type of counseling whether it be phone, internet, or face-to-face," said Sarah.

If you want help in your effort to stop smoking, call the Michigan Department of Community Health's toll-free number, 1-800-QUIT-NOW.
