MARQUETTE -- Tuesday was "Diabetes Awareness Day" and health professionals across the country and here in the U.P. are encouraging everyone to assess their risk.
According to the U.P. Diabetes Outreach Network (UPDON), seven out of ten senior citizens living in the Upper Peninsula have developed or run the risk of developing type two diabetes, and 50 percent of them are unaware of the heightened risk.
But as society becomes more sedentary and unhealthy, diets become more common. The risk in younger generations is growing rapidly.
"We're at high risk for having serious diabetes problems. Take action today, do one thing to live a healthier life, and if you haven't been checked recently, get checked," said UPDON Director, Ann Constance.
Health professionals also recommend a healthier diet and routine exercise to minimize the risk of developing the disease.
