Help Feed A Hungry Neighbor

Gearing up for the 2012 Canathon

THE 2012 TV6 CANATHON!

Time sure does fly when you are having fun! And the fun is about to begin with the upcoming 2012 TV6 Canathon. This year marks the 30th Anniversary for the TV6 Canathon and we are excited about getting things going.

It seems like only yesterday that I took over as the Director of the TV6 Canathon. It was 1990 to be exact and my goal was to expand the TV6 Canathon to include our entire viewing area. The event actually began in 1982 with about 700 pounds of food being donated to help the local food pantries. Since that time the annual donations have increased dramatically with over 142,000 pound of food being donated in 10 Upper Michigan Counties in 2011. Since the event began in 1982, the people of Upper Michigan have donated over 2.9 million pounds of food to their local food pantries. Our hopes are to exceed the 3 million pound mark during this our 30th Anniversary year. With your help I know we can do it together.

The continued success can be attributed to a number of factors. One of the most important is the partnerships we have developed over the years with a number of local organizations and radio stations.  In 2012, those partners include: WYKX/WDBC in Delta County, Y101 in Ontonagon County, Eagle Country Radio/The Rockin’ Eagle in Baraga, Houghton and Keweenaw Counties, St. Vincent DePaul Society and Salvation Army in Marquette County, The Munising News in Alger County, St. Vincent DePaul in  Iron County, plus the Good Neighbor Food Pantry in Schoolcraft County, the City of Ironwood (Bob Tervonen) and the Cities of Wakefield and Bessemer (John Siira) in Gogebic County, also in Gogebic County is WIMI/WJMS radio who are assisting with the event, WJNR/WOBE/WHTO in Dickinson County, and the NMU Volunteer Center on Northern Michigan University’s campus. This year we would like to welcome the Crossing Rivers Support Group and WPFF/WNLI Radio who will be coordinating and promoting TV6 Canathon collection efforts in Menominee County. I hope Menominee County residents will support this first time effort. In conjunction with the staff at TV6, these organizations work very hard to guarantee the continued success of the TV6 Canathon by organizing and/or promoting local food collection efforts in their communities.

Another factor that helps in a big way to make the TV6 Canathon such a success is the involvement of over 80 schools throughout Upper Michigan. From Elementary schools, to Middle and High schools, to local Colleges and Universities, students of all ages pitch in to collect much needed food for their local food pantries.

One very important aspect of the TV6 Canathon is that all food collected in your community stays there to “help feed a hungry neighbor.” Once the food is collected, it is distributed through St. Vincent DePaul Society and Salvation Army food banks and food pantries affiliated with various local churches.

With the current state of our economy, the need is expected to be greater than ever in 2012.  And it is through your generosity that the TV6 Canathon is able to offer assistance to the needy in our communities. Our heartfelt thanks goes out to all those who take a moment to make a donation.

The 2012 TV6 Canathon officially kicks-off on Monday, November 12, with collection continuing across Upper Michigan through Thursday, December 6.  The month long collection effort wraps up with a one-hour, commercial free special program “live” from TV6 starting at 7:00 p.m./6:00 CT on Thursday, December 6.  The program will include “live” reports from Marquette, Escanaba, Iron Mountain and Houghton. The public is invited to bring their donations to TV6 on December 6 between 7:00-8:00 p.m. EST and be part of our program.  Come and join us as we celebrate the 2012 TV6 Canathon!
