NEGAUNEE -- For parents, making sure their kids get the best education possible may mean living in one district and sending them to another. That's possible because of the school of choice program.
Schools in the program can accept students from another district. In Marquette and Alger counties there are 9,900 students, and eight percent go to a school of choice.
Many parents decide to participate in the program because of certain programs and class sizes.
This year, Negaunee Public Schools enrolled 179 students from out of district.
"I think that personal perception of the parents, when they live in one community and hear about the test scores of another, draws them to that district as they're looking for the best education opportunities for their children," said Negaunee Superintendent of Schools, Jim Derocher.
Open enrollment for school of choice happens at the beginning of school year and the second semester.
