NEGAUNEE -- This Halloween tradition is all about audience participation.
Known for its sensational characters dressed in drag and lingerie, the Rocky Horror Show started on the stage.
"Rocky Horror is a fun show; it's a sexy show, little bit risque," said makeup designer Jennifer Skogman, who also plays 'Magenta' in the show.
After it was made into a movie, its popularity soared as audience members began to shout responses to the actors' lines.
Director John Everson said, "I can't wait for opening night because the whole time we've been practicing the show, for two months now, we've been missing a character and that character is the audience."
The audience is encouraged to dress up like their favorite characters and bring their favorite props, and it's not unusual for those props to be thrown into the air or on stage during the show.
"That's what makes, I think, the show really fun," says Bobby Glenn Brown, who plays 'Frank-N-Furter.' "There aren't many theatrical events like that, especially as a performer you don't get the opportunity to have a lot of audience response to things other than applause."
The show is targeted towards adults, but Skogman says that's part of the appeal.
"It's just kind of fun to go out, have a great time," Jennifer said. "I think that's why a lot of audiences come to see it; it's something out of the ordinary that you don't get in your daily life.
These performers say the best part about doing the show is the fact that they can do it here.
"I absolutely love it," Brown said. "I love the Vista and I love performing here, and the community support is also what brings me back every year."
The Rocky Horror Show will be playing at the Vista Theater in downtown Negaunee from October 22 through October 24 and October 29 through October 31. Shows are at 7:30 p.m. with additional midnight shows on October 24 and 31.
Tickets are $12, midnight show tickets are $15.
