NEGAUNEE -- This Halloween tradition is all about audience participation.

Known for its sensational characters dressed in drag and lingerie, the Rocky Horror Show started on the stage.

"Rocky Horror is a fun show; it's a sexy show, little bit risque," said makeup designer Jennifer Skogman, who also plays 'Magenta' in the show.

After it was made into a movie, its popularity soared as audience members began to shout responses to the actors' lines.

Director John Everson said, "I can't wait for opening night because the whole time we've been practicing the show, for two months now, we've been missing a character and that character is the audience."

The audience is encouraged to dress up like their favorite characters and bring their favorite props, and it's not unusual for those props to be thrown into the air or on stage during the show.

"That's what makes, I think, the show really fun," says Bobby Glenn Brown, who plays 'Frank-N-Furter.'  "There aren't many theatrical events like that, especially as a performer you don't get the opportunity to have a lot of audience response to things other than applause."

The show is targeted towards adults, but Skogman says that's part of the appeal.

"It's just kind of fun to go out, have a great time," Jennifer said.  "I think that's why a lot of audiences come to see it; it's something out of the ordinary that you don't get in your daily life.

These performers say the best part about doing the show is the fact that they can do it here.

"I absolutely love it," Brown said.  "I love the Vista and I love performing here, and the community support is also what brings me back every year."

The Rocky Horror Show will be playing at the Vista Theater in downtown Negaunee from October 22 through October 24 and October 29 through October 31.  Shows are at 7:30 p.m. with additional midnight shows on October 24 and 31.

Tickets are $12, midnight show tickets are $15.

With Love and Respect - Your Frank-N-Furter

Posted by Bobby Glenn Brown, Mqt - Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 1:13 p.m.

Well it is closing night and another successful year of Rocky Horror. Until today I was unawear of this bruhaha. I am proud to say that I have played frank for 6 yrs. In my carreer s an actor I can attesst to the difficulty of playing this role. It is a marathon and workout Physically and Vocally. When I was on tour with country Music legend Kenny Rogers he told me he had seen me in RH I wasn't sure how that was possible. People in the U.P. and Negaunee would know if he showed up to the theatre. He told me he saw my audition tape for geting on his tour and it was my performance as Frank that got me the job with him. If you can perform that you can do anything! The show is not for everyone - But I can tell you several of my friends have brought kids and they are well adjusted well minded caring and exceptional people we've had babies in the audience and one year when I was cast as Bob Cratchit at NMU after Rocky Horror closed one of the kids asked the director of Scrooge - "Can Bobby wear fishnets in this show too!" If not for the community, business and regional support PAAC would not be able to continue to produce RH. I personally am overwhelmed by the support we have. I hope I have the opportunity to do it again. Opinions are good, discussions are healthy and judgement is negative. Don't Dream it, Be it. Hope to see you all at the theatre!

Isn't it still a free country?

I don't understand why something as simple as a show in a community building can bring on such anger in people. As of right now, today, it is still a free country. If you don't want to go, don't. But those that do want to have every right to go and enjoy it without having to argue to defend their right to do so.

Didn't your mother teach you, if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all!!

Slow folks

Jenny S you dont have to let your kids see it. It is not for KIDS. Hence the age restriction. Try doing research before posting.
Yooper Gal, now you are acting ignorant and uneducated in life. I am guess from your post the biggest area you have lived in is little lake. I am sorry for that. You really need to get out more. Most of the negative post's here sound like major homophobes. I feel sorry for you. It is a funny show but if you are not secure in your sexuality I can see where you may feel threatened.

WE WANT LIPS!!

To the cast and crew of RHPC . . .you guys rock! Great job as always! Bobby Glenn - I love you! Sorry I'm not there to see it this year!

Fun - plain and simple

I personally know someone in the cast who I watched grow just from being in the show. I think the play allows room for tolerance and understanding of another culture while still playfully poking fun at itself. So they dance around in dresses and lingerie, who cares?! There's no nudity and the simulated sex is tastefully done to hide everything behind imaginative artforms. Why exactly is this show "trash"? This is one of the only productions you can let loose, participate and just enjoy yourself. It's a lot of fun to watch!! Open your mind up a little. The show is no worse than primetime TV.

To all

RHPS is part of this community wether you like it or not. It is the only thing of its kind. NMU does a drag show every year and that is also tradition. Like the others have said, if you dont want your kids going then make them stay home. The age restriction is there for a reason. When I was 17 I went with my mother, she is a well respected, active member in this community and we had a blast. It is 2 weekends a year, and quite honestly some of the halloween costumes are worse then that of RHPS ( naughty nurse etc ) in my opinion... WE WANT LIPS!!!

Lets remember this is community theater. There are age restrictions, and anyone paying the admission price should know what the RHPS is about. If its not your cup of tea fine...don't go and wait for the next Vista production. Remember community means something for everyone.

Well Said Areu, Gary, Alexis & Mary...

If you don't want to see RHPC, then don't go. Simple as that. Drew Carey even had an episode on RHPC - it was hilarious.

And Yooper Gal, the costumes in RHPC is NOT the "norm" in big cities. Challenge yourself and stop with the sterotypes!

Jealous!

I sure wish I looked half as good as Bobby in a corset! Break legs cast!

That statement really helps perpetuate the negative stereotype held about the UP. Moving up here to avoid seeing all of those nasty-dressing city people what with their homosexuality and drag? Really? That doesn't make us seem like the bunch of backwoods intolerant hicks that we are so often portrayed as.

Hey now

No one is forcing anyone to see the show. Like others have said, don't go if it offends you, and if you have such a huge issue with it, DONT let your kids go. Simple as that. I know a LOT of people in the show, and they are great people who do NOT deserve to be badmouthed for participating in such 'trash.' If one is morally offended by a harmless, albeit racy, show, take the moral high road and don't resort to such childish slandering. And really, in the great scheme of things, Rocky Horror is not the worst thing to afflict society today. What about the freaks that make child pornography, kidnappers, bestiality, murderers and rapists? The list goes on and on. A community play is none of those, so don't act like it is.

LOVE IT!!

We go every year and it is a great time to be had by all. It is a comedy. There is an age restriction, children under 13 are not allowed in unless with a parent. The midnight shows are a little more risque because the audience dresses up more. If you are offended by risque comedy, I don't recommend going, but there is no reason to trash it if you have not been and have no idea what you are talking about. No one makes anyone go. We live in a country that gives us the right to chose where we go and what we see.

Give Me A Break, Jenny

Posted by Gary S., Ishpeming - Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 12:13 p.m.

C'mon, Jenny. Why be so hateful in your comments? I'm no fan of Rocky Horror Picture show myself. I don't agree with a lot of the antics in the show, but I most certainly wouldn't come on a public forum and start calling people out and saying that their art is "trash."

Who are you to judge? If you don't want your brats to see the show, then don't let them go to it. It's that simple.

simple solution

If this show offends you, then just don't go.
It is as simple as that. :0)

Ya' think NOT having to look at people dressed this way (the "norm" in big cities) could be a reason we choose to live in the U.P.?
Adult viewing of this production is fine but there should definitely be an age restriction on admittance - sexual inuendos might "be lost" on a younger audience but responsible parents won't subject their children to something like this. Trouble is, there's too many irresponsible parents.

Not as bad as it seems

Posted by Areu Kiddingme, Not there - Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 11:13 a.m.

LOL... there is no actual copulation on the stage and the high brow suggestiveness of sexual encounters is likely to be lost on immature members of the audience.....

Ever been to a real metropolitan area (outside of Da UP, eh)????? The RHPS 'costumes' are everyday wear in some segments of metro society..... and that, my dears, is ranging from the 1950s look worn by some in the beginning to the odd lingerie worn by several characters the main actors meet along their journey.

love it

Bobby Glenn Brown is a great performer. I love his Facebook page.

how bout some facts?

Posted by Jenny S, Marquette - Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 8:37 a.m.

Is there an age limit on admission, like no one under 18 allowed? I don't want my underage kids seeing this trash. Is Bobby Brown portraying the main transvestite character dressed only in a Victorian corset, hosiery and heels as in the original movie? Are the same type of sexual encounters as seen in the original also in this Negaunee production with the gay sexual scenes?

Um...

Posted by Joe Blo, Mqt - Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 8:31 a.m.

Tell it like it is. For those not in the know.....This is a musical about a very flamboyant transvestite seducing multiple characters both male and female with a large amount of sexual voyeuristic scenes.
