BIG BAY -- Seven high schools, 55 students, and one sound--that's the Superior Select Choir. On Saturday, they'll be performing together for the very first time.
"All of the students are select," said guest conductor Susan McAllister, "so the level of musicality, the level of attitude, and the level of enthusiasm is really high in a group like this."
To become a member of the choir, the students had to perform a chosen piece of music, and after auditioning a few months back, Westwood High School student Andrew Lesage is happy he had the opportunity to do so.
"I never thought I would join a choir like this, but I have learned just to step out of the box a little bit and try something new," said Andrew.
Andrew and the rest of the students arrived at Bay Cliff Health Camp Thursday evening for a three-day choral intensive. It's just one of the programs offered through the newly established Superior School Music Association which is working to improve and promote choral music education in the U.P. and neighboring schools in Wisconsin.
"It's really cool to be a member of more than one choir because you get a chance to learn a bunch of different things," said Houghton High School student Hannah Moran.
The students will be performing six pieces representing a range of different styles, not to mention challenging the skills of each performer.
On Saturday, they'll hold their first public performance at NMU's Reynolds Recital Hall, beginning at 3 p.m.
