MARQUETTE COUNTY -- Adam Whittington is not your typical Ishpeming 17 year old.  He's been singing since he was in a highchair and now he wants to make it big in the pop music industry.

"Basically in these last couple of years I really got into music,” said Adam.  “I picked up guitar, piano, and just started playing and found out it was my passion.  It’s what I want to do with my life and now I really want to pursue it."

So far he's doing pretty well.  Last spring he released his first CD of all original songs.  Some have even made it on to local radio station, Q107.

These days he's been working with another local teen singer, Emily Dawn.  He's made a music video and is now performing at local venues.

Although it's challenging, he says it's his music that keeps him going.

"Probably the passion, just that you can produce your own stuff and you can write lyrics down and share with people what you're feeling inside, about your day,” Adam said.

And now Adam is sending his CD to big recording labels, like Disney.  The messages in his songs fit pretty well with the ‘mouse house.’

"You don't have to go into drinking and drugs and smoking and stuff like that to have fun in this world,” Adam said.  “You can have fun without that and listen to music and hang out with friends and be with God, that kind of stuff."

To catch Adam in action, he'll be performing with Emily Dawn at the Marquette Commons this Saturday night at 7 p.m.

I wish you all the luck but keep trying to better yourselves as a person. Don't sell out into into doing this for money or fame instead of doing it to send a good message for all. Keep yourself dedicated for the right reasons and also keep your options open for learning other trades in life because you never know how things will go.

To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.

I've had the extreme pleasure of be able to get to know Adam and become great friends with him over the past few years. Adam is many things; talented, hard-working, attractive, inspiring, down to earth, smart, and so much more. One thing he is definitely not is mediocre.

True, as young children, many dream of making it as big stars in either the music or movie industry. When it becomes the time to actually pick a career though, many outgrow this dream because they realize the odds of becoming famous are slim thus discouraging them from their dream. But, if everyone let their dreams die we would not be blessed with the talents of anyone famous. It takes someone with true courage and raw talent to pursue dreams of making it big in the music industry, and I believe that Adam has what it takes.

Adam is never far from reality. He has a good head on his shoulders and tons of wonderful family and friends supporting him all along the way. No matter where life takes him these people will always be there for him, backing him up. As a role model, Adam has fantastic morals, and sends out a great message to kids as well as adults. He is close with God, and does what truly makes him happy. With a voice of an angel, I believe Adam will one day reach his dreams, he certainly has the talent to do so.

Billie Jean is not my lover, but she has a grip on reality.

There are thousands of kids like this across the country. None of them are going to become rich and famous either. If every boring, attractive white kid who picked up an acoustic guitar got a record deal, who would snooze us to death at every college quad and open mic night across the country?

I blame the poor UP music scene, small pond and such. The bland, inoffensive drivel that is drawing such rave reviews here is the unheard background noise in thousands of metropolitan coffee shops and dive bars.

That said, I wish them all the best and hope reality doesn't come crashing down too hard after having their ego's blindly stroked by so many.

With the state of popular music, who knows? These kids might just be mediocre enough to make it big.

I wish anyone demonstrating passion, and desire the will to succeed.

I sometimes think along the same line as Bille Jean. The music/entertainment industry is filled with inglorious bastards who will trample those dreams, and sell the talent to the devil if it means a tidy profit. Entertainment is marketing.

If making it big means making a living doing what you love, then I'm all for it....if making it big means a private jet, and having your name in lights, well that comes with one hellofa price (or so I've heard).

Pursue your dreams kids, have a plan, and have a back up plan, always remember that there is nothing more common than unsuccessful people with talent.

Stay true to your heart....this stranger truly wishes you both the best.

Great voice

I don't know about Disney, I think he could do much better than that. He has an excellent voice and I believe his talent can take him quite far.

I totally believe that God has plans for both of you. He is the One that will guide your Path in life, as long as you let Him. You both have such a positive spirit and message, it is very touching. Adam, you are blessing. Emily, you are a blessing to your family and friends.

Love you both...
Looking forward to Saturday.

I heard this young man at my church in Gwinn and was very impressed with his music. He may bring young people back to God and the church and I hope he has success in all he does. He is a very talented young man and I wish him nothing but the best!

Adam you have amazing talent. I am so proud of you and all that you have accomplished. Your hard work and dedication to your music has paid off and will continue to pay off. You not only have amazing talent but you also have a huge heart for the people that you are performing for. Don't let anyone tell you that you won't or can't make it in the music industry. You have the drive and determination that will take you wherever you want to go. Thank you for blessing me and many, many others with your talent. Congratulations on a job well done!!!

AMAZING!!!

Posted by Taci Chan, Ishpeming - Thursday, September 24, 2009 at 9:51 a.m.

These 2 young adults have amazing talent. Whether they come from a small town or a big city, they are going to make it in the entertainment business. They have 2 of the purest hearts that I have ever seen in anyone. They are not only super talented but they also have a genuine love for what they are doing and for the people that they are doing it for. The devotion and hard work that they put into their music is phenomenal. To both of you, Adam and Emily, I say congratulations on your success this far, and I am so excited to see all of the opportunities that have already and will be opening up for the both of you. Keep on moving forward no matter what obstacles come your way. I am so proud of and love you both very much!! =)

Great Teens

Posted by Regina Spiroff, Ishpeming - Thursday, September 24, 2009 at 9:43 a.m.

Yes, these kids are very talented as many teens in this community are. Some practice basketball some practice music. What I've always stressed with Emily is enjoy what you are doing. Small town, big city, it doesn't matter. Performing is something she just started 1.5 years ago. Before that she was a shy teen, that was content to sing in her room.
She has already made it in the music industry. Doing shows around town, working with Adam that is success. Anything bigger is icing on the cake. These kids are having fun, writing music, making music videos. Most of all sending a positive message to young kids that you don't have to drink, do drugs, to have a good time. If they make it out of the area, great for them. But they are not relying on that to make them happy. They are just enjoying the ride. As should be. Billie Jean- thanks for your support, and Emily was called by a talent scout in Burbank CA, major recording studio. She declined until she finds out who wins the Record Deal with Miley. So getting out of the area and promoting music isn't to far off for these kids. Hope you stop by the concert on Sat. and check Emily and Adam out for yourself.

So Proud

I am going to side with Holly and say that I can't wait to prove the "Billie Jean" comments wrong. If you had only seen how far they have come in just the last month you would wholeheartedly believe that they are going to go far. Who are you to say that they aren't?

Adam: I have to say that I am very proud of what you have accomplished. I am just blown away by how talented you are. Just in this last month you have come so far. Not only have you come far in your music you have stayed very level headed. You are the perfect example of a great role model and I see how your fans really look up to you. I don't doubt that you will make it big. I also know that you will continue to be a wonderful role model and set a good example for those who look up to you. You should know that I will be the first one in line to buy your first CD when you make it big!

Emily: You are such an amazing artist. I also think you are a wonderful role model. Every little girl wants to be just like you. Keep that smile on your face and never let anyone tell you that you can't do it because I know that you most certainly can. You have such a wonderful talent and you also stay level headed about it. I can't wait to buy your top selling CD in the future!

Very proud Mom

I have watched Adam over the past years and truly believe he will fulfill his dreams in this area as will Emily Dawn. I understand Billy Jean's input, but coming from a perspective of not making it out of Marquette is already not true. Adam has been invited to NY, Colorado and other out of state venues. I am aware of Emily also being invited outside of Marquette... as for Hollywood, I believe they will both succeed and it is going to shock the industry! There are good people in Hollywood and the entire music industry is not wrong or bad, so we'll watch and see. Adam has his managers, promotional people, family and God...as does Emily... watch and see...you are going to be totally amazed! Thank you so much to our community for their encouragement and support!!

Positive roll model

Posted by Nunya Business, Harvey - Thursday, September 24, 2009 at 7:54 a.m.

For Billie Jean: Way to motivate. Hope you never volunteer to work a suicide hotline. But glad to see you agree that he is talented.

For Adam: Great job and keep with it. You are a positive roll model and it is always good to see this type of story. Plenty of musicians have come from a small town so do not let your location discourage you at all.

So proud

Posted by Holly Letson, Ishpeming - Thursday, September 24, 2009 at 7:36 a.m.

First of all, to Billie Jean: I'm going to watch Adam and Emily prove you wrong. They have the passion, drive, and talent to "get out of Marquette," and they'll do it. Everyone has to start somewhere, right?

Anyway, on a positive note, I cannot say enough how proud I am of Adam. I also thought TV6 did an amazing job with this piece. If you haven't heard his music yet, you definitely should. www.adamwhittington.com or check out his first music video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaWHOAb65go

Unfortunately in today's world of popular music, talent is no longer something you are born with. It is something that is created for you by massive hype machines behind major labels. Since Disney is mentioned, I have a question for the readers: does anyone think Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus is actually a good singer? I'm not talking about the quality of songs she sings, I'm talking her actual vocal abilities compared to a real singer, like Bette Midler or Stevie Nicks.

Of course not, her vocals are terrible.

But Disney has a lot of pull in the industry, so Hannah Montana usually has one of the top grossing concert tours every year. And when Miley Cyrus gets too old, they'll find a new cash cow to play marionette to the fat cats at Disney.

Real music seems to only exist at the local level these days. No truly talented singer/songwriter can make it in the music industry because they don't have an army of promoters, stylists, managers, and assistants pushing them into the limelight.

I listened to the music of both these kids, and they're pretty good. They obviously have a great deal of natural talent and excellent voices to boot. Too bad they'll never make it out of Marquette...
