GWINN -- Rounding out the weekend of sled dog races in the UP 200 weekend was the Jack Pine 30 in Gwinn. This 31-mile race loops teams through Sand Plains and back to Gwinn.

Local residents eagerly cheered on the six-dog sled teams as they took off from the start line.

Organizers say this event is great for mushers looking for a leisurely competition.

"This race is a mix of people who have never raced before and others who have experience in distanced races, including Iditarod," said race director, Darlene Walch.

A total of 18 teams competed this year.

Mushers usually cross the finish line in under three hours, and this year’s first place prize is $200.
