MARQUETTE -- The numbers are in, and this year's firearm deer season was a success in Upper Michigan.

According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, this year's deer harvest in the U.P. could be up as much as 10 percent. At check stations, officials from the DNR saw far more deer than last year, and many of them were older and healthier.

"What hunters are telling me is they saw lots of bucks; they let a lot of small bucks go. We've had three really mild winters and even this winter is shaping up to be mild as well. We could be setting the stage for just an unbelievable season next year," said DNR Biologist Brian Roell.

The DNR is also planning survey of hunters to get even more data regarding the hunting season.
