It’s hard to predict what’s going to happen next. Whether it be a car accident, a break-in at home or a long-term disease, it’s important to stay insured.

However, deciding on what to insure and for how much can be equally tragic. Here are some helpful hints to help you determine the ins and outs of insurance.

1. Deciding on an insurance agent. Do your research and get a live person on the phone to help answer questions and provide a feel for customer service.
2. Home replacement-guarantee insurance. In the event that you lose your home to a fire or a natural disaster, you’ll need all the coverage you can get.
3. Liability limits. Don’t set limits on what your home, car and health is worth. It’s challenging to predict what losses you will suffer in the future, but setting your limits equally can provide additional coverage across the board.
4. Liability gaps. Liability gaps occur when you’re not covered appropriately. Usually your insurance agent should spot this and provide recommendations to fill the gap. Otherwise, cross-check your paperwork, especially if you have multiple insurance accounts through various agents.
5. Life insurance. More often than not, life insurance provides money for the funeral. Don’t leave your family having to pull funds together to organize a decent funeral. Pay for it upfront.
6. Long-term disability. This is the most overlooked insurance policy. In the event that you are hurt, disabled or sick and cannot work, this policy provides an additional income. However, if you can support yourself on your own, you may not want to invest in long-term disability.

Protect yourself and the ones you love by ensuring that you’re insured.
