HANCOCK -- The Portage Health Trauma Center in Hancock has been, once again, verified by the American College of Surgeons.

The Portage Health Trauma Center is a level three center that provides orthopedic assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  It is one of two level three trauma centers in the State of Michigan and the only one in the Upper Peninsula to be verified by the ACS.

The hospital says it does not have to go through the verification process but chooses to so it can assure its patients that they are receiving top-notch care.

"Our nurses are trained in trauma nursing, how to care for injuries," said Vicky Peterson, Trauma Program Manager. "Our emergency department providers are all trained specially in trauma and so are our surgeons. What that means for us is that we can provide optimal care for our patients."

The ACS verifies hospitals every three years. Portage Health has been verified in 2007, 2010, and 2013.
