MARQUETTE -- Wednesday night in Marquette, over a dozen community members came together to learn about preventing suicide.

The Marquette Area Public School District invited Mary Van Haute, a certified trainer in suicide prevention, to hold the training session.

The topics discussed ranged from identifying warning signs to who to reach out for help.  Several parents brought along their teenage kids to the session.

"One of the things you'll see in the presentation tonight is giving the parents the courage to ask the question, or to talk about suicide to fight the myth that many parents believe talking about suicide would plant the seed, and that's a myth.  So having both the parent and the child there is a good starting point to have a conversation about it," said Van Haute.

Earlier Wednesday, Van Haute taught a full-day suicide prevention course to educators from around Marquette County.
