HANCOCK -- Portage Health Hospital will soon implement Namaste care for dementia patients in hospice.

Namaste care gives patients with advanced dementia meaningful activities like washing the patient's face and having nurses use encouraging and uplifting words.

The hospital welcomed Joyce Simard, a dementia expert who developed Namaste care.

"It's actually a Hindu term that means to honor the spirit within, and I did that because I saw so many people with advanced dementia who could no longer participate in programming, usually in nursing facilities," said Simard.

Portage Health says their goal is to create a very calm and serene environment for dementia patients in order to enhance each patient's quality of life.
