MARINETTE -- The Marinette Marine Corporation has been awarded options to build two additional Littoral Combat Ships, the company announced this week.

These ships will be the fifth and sixth LCS ships that MMC has been contracted to build. Officials with the corporation say that this will provide the company with work through 2016, which will help maintain the workforce of 1,400 employees.

"We are extremely proud and humbled to build these fine ships for our nation's warfighters," said MMC President and CEO Chuck Goddard. "The dedication and skills of our workforce are second to none."

Under the Navy's block buy contract with MMC, the LCS 5 Milwaukee, LCS 7 Detroit, and LCS 9 Little Rock are currently under construction. The company is also working to procure materials for the LCS 11 Sioux City. The first two ships built, the USS Freedom and USS Fort Worth, have already been delivered to the Navy.
