MARQUETTE COUNTY -- The Environmental Protection Agency has withdrawn one of its objections to the County Road 595 proposal in Marquette County.  The road would provide a more direct route for trucks going to and from Rio Tinto's Eagle Mine.

The EPA had been concerned that alternate routes were not adequately considered.  That objection has been withdrawn, but the EPA still says construction of the road would have a significant impact on wetlands and wildlife in the area.

Congressman Dan Benishek called the developments a small step forward in the process of getting the road built.  The Michigan Department of Environment Quality supports building the road, but permission is still needed from the EPA.

The Marquette County Road Commission will hold a press conference at 9:00 a.m. Thursday to discuss their next step.
