HOUGHTON -- Students on Houghton Middle School's Math Team are taking their pencils and calculators to the state competition this weekend.

Five students in grades sixth through eighth won first place against seven other Upper Peninsula schools in Kingsford last week. The state competition consists of three different sections including individual and team tests.

The competition is this Saturday, March 9 at the GM Tech Center in downstate Warren. The students say they're excited for the competition and proud to represent their school.

"This is my last time to go to states and try to do well, so I'm just going to hope for the best," said eighth grader Noah Gershenson.

"It's fun and exiting and hard at the same time," added sixth grader George Tang.

"I want to get a good score since this is my last year," commented eighth grader Maggie Wang.

The team leaves for the state competition on Friday.
