ESCANABA -- Monday night, Escanaba Public Safety sponsored a social awareness speaking engagement that featured former Green Bay Packers' kicker, Chester Marcol.  The event took place at the Escanaba High School auditorium.

Marcol recently wrote a book called "Alive and Kicking: My Journey Through Football, Addiction, and Life."

It's an autobiography that chronicles Marcol's struggles immigrating from Poland, as well as his rise to the NFL.  The most compelling subject is his story on how drug and alcohol addiction caused his fall from his football career.  His lowest point was his attempted suicide in 1986.

"Just be honest.  People like real people.  I don't want to pretend.  I just want to let them know this is who I am and there is hope and I have changed," said Marcol.

Marcol was scheduled to speak to Escanaba 7th through 12th graders Tuesday.
