Business Type: Great Lakes Recovery Centers is a nationally accredited treatment provider specializing in addiction and behavioral health needs, offering quality substance abuse treatment and relapse prevention services since 1983. At Great Lakes Recovery Centers, we operate specialized adult residential substance abuse treatment facilities in Marquette and Sault Ste. Marie as well as the only adolescent residential substance abuse treatment facility for youth ages 12-17 in Upper Michigan. Currently, we have fourteen outpatient offices located throughout the Upper Peninsula to serve individuals and families with their specific needs.
We offer a wide array of services for adults, adolescents and children including:

Community involvement and service learning projects are another aspect of service that Great Lakes Recovery Centers feels strongly about. Our staff and clients have opportunities to give back to the community by participating in several events and community enrichment projects throughout the year. Some examples of how we strive to raise public awareness surrounding addiction and behavioral health issues are by coordinating and/or participating with the community by hosting an Annual 5K Recovery Run/Walk in Marquette, the New Hope Golf Challenge in Sault Ste. Marie and participating in the “Out of the Darkness” Suicide Prevention Walk in Marquette. We are also proud to be the lead agency for the Annual “Great Giving” Care Packages to Our Troops campaign, supporting military members from the Upper Peninsula during the holiday season.

Greg Toutant, MS Ed, CAAC, CCS-R, Executive Director Greg Toutant serves as the Executive Director and CEO of Great Lakes Recovery Centers and has over 19 years experience working in the field of addiction and behavioral health treatment services. He graduated from Northern Michigan University and also the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, with a Masters Degree in Counseling. Greg holds certification as a Certified Advanced Addictions Counselor and Certified Clinical Supervisor. For the past eight years, Greg has been a consultant for behavioral health program surveys for the international accreditation body, CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities). Greg previously served as the Deputy Director of Clinical Operations and has been with Great Lakes Recovery Centers for 10 years. In addition to work with Great Lakes, Greg is an active member in the trade group ALSAO (Association of Licensed Substance Abuse Organizations), and serves on the Board of Directors for North Star Academy, the Marquette County Community Corrections Board and the Negaunee Community Foundation Board. Mary Jane Burcar, BSW, MA, CAC-R, CJC, Program Director - Adult Residential Services - Marquette Sue began working with Great Lakes Recovery Centers in 1984 as an intern from the Social Work Department of Northern Michigan University where she earned her both a Bachelor of Social Work degree and a MA degree. She has experience working in several of our programs including; the half-way house, youth services, outpatient services and the PACT program before moving to the adult residential services program where she was a case manager for the corrections program, counselor and supervisor prior to becoming the program director. Sue was instrumental in developing the Federal Bureau of Prisons program in 1991, and is a Certified Criminal Justice Addiction Specialist. Teresa Piziali, LBSW, CAC-R, Program Director – Youth Residential Services – Marquette Teresa has worked for Great Lakes Recovery Centers for 14 years. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from Northern Michigan University and is credentialed as a CAC-R Certified Addiction Counselor by the Michigan Certification Board of Addiction Professionals. Teresa holds a Michigan Bachelors of Social Work License, and is also an Internationally Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor by the International Certification of Reciprocity Consortium. Julie Salo, BSW, CAC-R, Substance Abuse Services Manager - Outpatient Services / Locations: Escanaba, Iron Mountain, Ironwood, Ishpeming, Marquette, Menominee, Munising and KI Sawyer Julie is the Outpatient Substance Abuse Manager for our central and western Upper Michigan locations. Julie obtained her CAC-R Certified Addiction Counselor by the Michigan Certification Board of Addiction Professionals. Julie has seven years of experience working with adults and adolescents. Her specialty is substance abuse assessments and providing case management for the sobriety court. Mike Patten, Operations Manager Mike is a native of Newberry, MI and graduate of Lake Superior State University (1991) with a BS in Business Administration and Computer Information System Management. Mike has been employed with Great Lakes Recovery Centers since 1990 and has held various positions, including counselor, business administrator, IT Manager, and most recently Operations Manager. Mike has two children, is a small farmer, horseman, and avid outdoors sportsman. Mike is also a USMC Veteran and enjoys being involved with public/local government, veteran's issues/affairs, and rural affairs.
Question Will Insurance cover my stay at Great Lakes Recovery Centers?
Answer Great Lakes Recovery Centers accepts most commercial health insurance plans for our outpatient services and many of our clients have all or part of the cost of treatment covered by funding agencies or insurance. If you are seeking residential treatment and have insurance, please contact our business office to determine if your insurance will fund a treatment stay. A representative at our business office can offer you more specific information based on your situation.
