SANDS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) - Michigan State Police Troopers from the Negaunee Post were dispatched to a two car crash on M-553 near the County Road 480 intersection known as the Crossroads on August 11 at approximately 3 p.m.
The crash occurred when Duane Ruska, 64, of Sands Township failed to yield the right of way when entering onto M-553 from the north side of the Crossroads Mini Mart. Ruska was driving a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee when he attempted a left hand turn to go north on M-553 and drove out in front of Mary Albarello-Burbey, 55, of Sands Township. Albarello-Burbey was driving a 2005 Dodge Caravan traveling south on M-553 approaching the Crossroads intersection when the crash occurred.
Ruska and Albarello-Burbey were both wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Albarello-Burbey was transported to U.P. Health Systems -
Marquette for treatment of the injuries she received as a result of the crash.
Ruska was determined to be the at fault driver and was cited for “failing to yield the right of way” and “operating with an expired driver’s license”.
Assisting at the scene were Chocolay Township Police and Sands Township EMS.
